{"id":416669,"date":"2025-09-11T20:29:17","date_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:29:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/416669\/"},"modified":"2025-09-11T20:29:17","modified_gmt":"2025-09-11T20:29:17","slug":"nhs-drug-pricing-concerns-fuel-fears-for-uk-pharma-investment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/416669\/","title":{"rendered":"NHS drug pricing concerns fuel fears for UK pharma investment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The government has been warned that big pharma companies are withholding investment in the UK after Merck scrapped a \u00a31 billion London research centre \u2014 a move that prompted questions in both houses of parliament on Thursday and a select committee to call an urgent session for next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">The US drug company, known as MSD in Europe, pulled its plan to open a new 25,000 sq ft headquarters in the Knowledge Quarter near King\u2019s Cross on Wednesday. The building is in late-stage construction and was expected to open its doors in 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Merck, which also plans to discontinue its discovery research operations in the UK, with the loss of 125 employees, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/merck-attacks-uk-life-sciences-investment-scraps-1bn-hq-jbzz9nmnb\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">blamed the decision<\/a> on the lack of \u201cmeaningful progress towards addressing the lack of investment in the life science industry and the overall undervaluation of innovative medicines and vaccines by successive UK governments\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Headshot of Richard Torbett.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\/ece13e0f-9a46-4497-ad9c-3ef12e4acfb8.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Richard Torbett warned the decision could be \u201cthe canary in the coalmine\u201d<\/p>\n<p>LINKEDIN.COM<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Richard Torbett, the chief executive of the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry, whose members include Merck, warned that the \u201cdecision could be the canary in the coalmine. We know other companies are taking a hard look at their UK investments and future product launch pipeline\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Julia Lopez, the shadow science, innovation and technology secretary, said in an urgent Commons question that the \u201cgovernment must wake up\u2019, and called Merck\u2019s decision \u201ca klaxon sounding across Whitehall\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Professor Sir John Bell, a senior industry figure who has advised governments on life sciences, told the Today programme on BBC Radio 4 that he had spoken to several big pharma bosses in the past six months \u201cand they\u2019re all in the same space \u2014 and that is they\u2019re not going to do any more investing in the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Merck\u2019s decision prompted Dame Chi Onwurah, chairwoman of the science, innovation and technology committee, to announce an urgent session on Tuesday. Merck and the government are expected to be called upon to give evidence.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Portrait of Chi Onwurah, UK Parliament.\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/\/50b82a8c-e028-4ff3-a645-5aca26a81551.jpg\" class=\"responsive-sc-1nnon4d-0 bAbKns\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dame Chi Onwurah has called a session of her committee<\/p>\n<p>UK PARLIAMENT<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">In the Lords, in response to another urgent question on Merck\u2019s decision, Lord Vallance of Balham, the science minister and a former senior executive at GSK, said the company continued to employ more than 1,600 people in the UK and that the decision reflected a \u201cbroader effort to optimise its resources. They announced in July that they would cut $3 billion per year by 2027 and 6,000 jobs would go worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Vallance, who called together cross-government officials on Wednesday, cited large investments by Moderna and<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/covid-vaccine-jab-biontech-investment-rhfnlkvhw\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> BioNTech<\/a> in the UK and said the government\u2019s plan for the sector under its recent industrial strategy had been welcomed, but conceded \u201cwe do know that as part of that the commercial environment for medicines in the UK needs to be improved\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"responsive__Paragraph-sc-1pktst5-0 gaEeqC\">Talks between the government and industry over reforming a contentious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.com\/article\/biotech-growths-missing-link-appetite-for-risk-09q8zt0qw\" class=\"link__RespLink-sc-1ocvixa-0 csWvlP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS drug-pricing scheme<\/a> collapsed last month.
