{"id":417352,"date":"2025-09-12T02:41:09","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:41:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/417352\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T02:41:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T02:41:09","slug":"medications-leave-lasting-mark-on-gut-microbiome-even-years-after-use","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/417352\/","title":{"rendered":"Medications leave lasting mark on gut microbiome, even years after use"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>            <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/medications-leave-last.jpg\" alt=\"Medications leave lasting mark on the gut microbiome, even years after use\" title=\"Credit: Karl-Erik Piirimees.\" width=\"800\" height=\"530\"\/><\/p>\n<p>                Credit: Karl-Erik Piirimees.<\/p>\n<p>Medications taken years ago can continue to shape the human gut microbiome, according to a large-scale study from the University of Tartu Institute of Genomics.<\/p>\n<p>Analyzing <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/stool+samples\/\" rel=\"tag noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">stool samples<\/a> and prescription records from over 2,500 Estonian Biobank participants in the Estonian Microbiome cohort, researchers found that the majority of drugs studied were linked to microbiome changes, with a substantial number of them also showing long-term effects detectable years after patients stopped taking them.<\/p>\n<p>The impact was not limited to antibiotics: antidepressants, beta-blockers, <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/proton+pump+inhibitors\/\" rel=\"tag noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">proton pump inhibitors<\/a>, and benzodiazepines all left microbial &#8220;fingerprints.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Most microbiome studies only consider current medications, but our results show that past drug use can be just as important as it is a surprisingly strong factor in explaining individual microbiome differences,&#8221; said Dr. Oliver Aasmets, lead author. This highlights that it is critical to account for drug usage history when studying links between the microbiome and disease. The research is <a href=\"https:\/\/journals.asm.org\/doi\/10.1128\/msystems.00541-25\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published<\/a> in the journal mSystems.<\/p>\n<p>Interestingly, benzodiazepines\u2014commonly prescribed for anxiety\u2014had microbiome effects comparable to <a href=\"https:\/\/medicalxpress.com\/tags\/broad-spectrum+antibiotics\/\" rel=\"tag noopener\" class=\"textTag\" target=\"_blank\">broad-spectrum antibiotics<\/a>. The results also show that drugs from the same class that might be used for the same condition, e.g. diazepam and alprazolam, may differ in how much they disrupt the microbiome.<\/p>\n<p>Follow-up samples from a subset of participants confirmed that starting or stopping certain drugs caused predictable microbial shifts, suggesting causal effects.
