{"id":417505,"date":"2025-09-12T04:07:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T04:07:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/417505\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T04:07:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T04:07:19","slug":"no-prospect-of-uk-rejoining-eu-in-my-lifetime-says-starmers-reset-negotiator-foreign-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/417505\/","title":{"rendered":"No prospect of UK rejoining EU in my lifetime, says Starmer\u2019s reset negotiator | Foreign policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Britain will not rejoin the EU in the foreseeable future, according to the minister who has piloted Keir Starmer\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/2025\/may\/19\/keir-starmer-uk-eu-reset-deal-win-win\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent reset<\/a> of European relations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Nick Thomas-Symonds said he could not see the country re-entering the bloc in his lifetime, despite the thaw in continental relations that he has helped bring about.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked whether he could conceive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/politics\/eu-referendum\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brexit<\/a> being reversed within such a timescale, Thomas-Symonds told the Guardian\u2019s Politics Weekly podcast: \u201cI can\u2019t. What I can say is that the work I have been doing with the democratic mandate from the 2024 general election is building a closer, more constructive relationship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">He added: \u201cWhat I\u2019m about now, having reset the relationship, is building this new strategic partnership.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thomas-Symonds\u2019 comments underline a view in senior government circles that European membership is probably off the table for ever, not least because of the way in which the EU has changed since Britain\u2019s departure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Asked to make a similar prediction about rejoining the customs union or the single market, however \u2013 which economists say would boost UK growth \u2013 Thomas-Symonds demurred. Labour\u2019s 2024 manifesto promised not to re-enter either in this parliament, but the party has not made such a commitment beyond the next election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe\u2019ve pledged not to rejoin the single market or the customs union or go back to freedom of movement and that remains,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Thomas-Symonds, one of the prime minister\u2019s closest ministerial allies, has spent his first year in office shuttling between European countries as he negotiated the finer points of an outline agreement to forge closer ties between the UK and EU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">That deal, which Starmer announced in May, extended fishing quotas in British waters and linked the carbon emissions trading schemes on either side of the Channel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">More significantly, it also gave Thomas-Symonds and his European counterparts a remit to negotiate new deals on youth mobility and trade in agricultural products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">One outcome of the improved UK-EU relations has been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk-news\/2025\/jul\/10\/starmer-one-in-one-out-deal-allow-uk-return-small-boat-migrants-france\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a returns agreement<\/a> with France allowing Britain to return up to 50 asylum seekers a week who have crossed the Channel in return for taking 50 others with connections to the UK.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">That deal, along with a separate agreement that French authorities should begin intercepting small boats as far as 300 metres away from their own shore, has been put in peril by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2025\/sep\/08\/francois-bayrou-ousted-as-french-pm-after-losing-confidence-vote\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent collapse<\/a> of the government in Paris.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-12\" class=\"dcr-jzxpee\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1xjndtj\">Our morning email breaks down the key stories of the day, telling you what\u2019s happening and why it matters<\/p>\n<p><strong>Privacy Notice: <\/strong>Newsletters may contain information about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties.
