Leeds United\u2019s requirement for a \u201cregular goalscorer\u201d has seen Daniel Farke turn his attention to Crystal Palace\u2019s Jean-Philippe Mateta, sources have told Football Insider<\/strong><\/p>\n Farke saw Leeds fail with a pair of late moves for Harry Wilson<\/a> and former loanee Manor Solomon<\/a>, and Football Insider<\/strong> reported on 5 September that the Leeds boss is \u201cconcerned\u201d at their lack of firepower<\/a>.<\/p>\n As I revealed on the latest edition of Football Insider\u2019s Inside Track podcast<\/a><\/strong>, Leeds still want to bring in a regular goalscorer in January despite the additions of both Lukas Nmecha<\/a> and Dominic Calvert-Lewin<\/a>.<\/p>\n Mateta<\/a> has emerged as an option to solve Leeds\u2019 goalscoring problems amid uncertainty over his Crystal Palace future, but they\u2019ve been told to pay roughly \u00a350million after Tottenham saw a \u00a340m bid rejected<\/a>.<\/p>\n Farke<\/a> has been described as taking Leeds \u201cinto a gun fight with a water pistol\u201d<\/a> due to their lack of quality in the final third, but my sources have said this is an area the Whites will look to address come January.<\/p>\n Sources have told Football Insider<\/strong> that while Leeds<\/a> believe Calvert-Lewin in particular could be a \u201creal asset\u201d if he stays fit this season, another striker like Mateta is needed for their survival to be assured.<\/p>\n Football Insider <\/strong>revealed on Monday that Crystal Palace have no plans to sell Mateta in January<\/a> amid interest from Leeds and Newcastle<\/a>, after Man United<\/a> also emerged as a possible destination for him.<\/p>\n MORE FOOTBALL INSIDER STORIES<\/p>\n On the new Inside Track podcast<\/strong><\/a>, I was told that a move for Mateta \u201cis never going to happen\u201d at Elland Road, but my sources have said that Leeds are still working on signing a new number nine.<\/p>\n \u201cObviously they were in the market for an attacking player right up until deadline day \u2013 Leeds have yet to score a goal in open play in the Premier League in three games\u201d, I told Football Insider<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201c[Lukas] Nmecha has been leading the line in the first few games of season, while [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin came on and did quite well against Newcastle.<\/p>\n \u201cIf he can stay fit, he could prove to be a real asset for Leeds United, so there are options there for Daniel Farke\u2019s team. <\/p>\n \u201cIt\u2019s obvious they will need a regular goalscorer if they are to have any chance of staying up.\u201d<\/p>\n Leeds\u2019 goalscoring issues so far this term have been billed as the most likely problem to result in Farke\u2019s sacking<\/a> at some point in the campaign, although the German hasn\u2019t been entirely backed in the market.<\/p>\n Even if Palace did decide to sell their star striker Mateta as soon as January, Leeds would likely be behind the likes of Newcastle, West Ham<\/a> and arch-rivals Man United in the running given their league status.<\/p>\n![\"Dominic](\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/dominic-calvert-lewin-leeds-1024x576.png\")
