{"id":41851,"date":"2025-04-22T19:15:10","date_gmt":"2025-04-22T19:15:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/41851\/"},"modified":"2025-04-22T19:15:10","modified_gmt":"2025-04-22T19:15:10","slug":"telegram-to-leave-france-if-it-is-forced-to-provide-backdoor-access","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/41851\/","title":{"rendered":"Telegram to leave France if it is forced to provide backdoor access"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>ISTANBUL<\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>The CEO of Telegram vowed that the app would leave France if authorities keep pushing for a grant to access messages.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTelegram would rather exit a market than undermine encryption with backdoors and violate basic human rights,\u201d Pavel Durov wrote Monday on X.<\/p>\n<p>Durov noted that the French National Assembly was \u201cwise\u201d to reject a law last month that proposed a ban on encryption, which would have made France the first country to \u201cstrip its citizens of their right to privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The encryption dispute, however, was renewed after being advocated last Friday by the Paris Police Prefect, according to the Telegram CEO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s technically impossible to guarantee that only the police can access a backdoor. Once introduced, a backdoor can be exploited by other parties \u2014 from foreign agents to hackers. As a result, the private messages of all law-abiding citizens can get compromised,\u201d Durov wrote.<\/p>\n<p>He said the law would not help combat drug trafficking as criminals could still communicate using smaller apps despite the backdoor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn accordance with the EU Digital Services Act, if provided with a valid court order, Telegram would only disclose the IP addresses and phone numbers of criminal suspects \u2014 not messages,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Durov noted that the European Commission also proposed a similar initiative for backdoors for messaging apps, underlining that \u201cno country is immune to the slow erosion of freedoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe must keep explaining to lawmakers that encryption isn\u2019t built to protect criminals \u2014 it protects the privacy and safety of ordinary people.
