{"id":418988,"date":"2025-09-12T17:28:18","date_gmt":"2025-09-12T17:28:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/418988\/"},"modified":"2025-09-12T17:28:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-12T17:28:18","slug":"russia-says-ukraine-talks-paused-as-it-launches-major-drills-with-belarus-border-disputes-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/418988\/","title":{"rendered":"Russia says Ukraine talks paused as it launches major drills with Belarus | Border Disputes News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"376\" data-end=\"562\">Peace talks between Russia and Ukraine are on hold, the Kremlin has announced, accusing European countries of obstructing negotiations, while United States President Donald Trump warns he may be running out of patience with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\">The comments on Friday come as\u00a0Moscow says it remains open to dialogue, while it escalates its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/7\/russian-attacks-on-ukraines-kyiv-kill-at-least-3-strike-govt-building\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bombardment<\/a> of Ukrainian cities and fierce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/11\/russias-putin-hails-war-advances-ukraine-retakes-parts-of-donetsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fighting rages in Donetsk<\/a> in the east.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 3 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"564\" data-end=\"788\">\u201cThe channels of communication are in place and functioning. Our negotiators can communicate through them. But for now, it is probably more accurate to say there is a pause,\u201d Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"790\" data-end=\"929\">\u201cThe Russian side remains ready to pursue the path of peaceful dialogue. But it is true that the Europeans are hindering this,\u201d he added without elaborating.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"790\" data-end=\"929\">Kyiv\u2019s European allies have been readying further sanctions on Moscow, urging Washington to do the same, and pressing for a ceasefire that failed to materialise after Trump hosted Putin for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/8\/16\/no-deal-at-trump-putin-meeting-key-takeaways-from-alaska-summit\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">summit in Alaska<\/a> last month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In an interview with Fox News on Friday, Trump, when asked if his patience with Putin had run out, said: \u201cYeah. It\u2019s sort of running out and running out fast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The US president said he had long had a good relationship with Putin, but expressed frustration at his failure to end the war.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to have to come down very, very strong,\u201d he said, adding that sanctions on banks and oil were an option, along with tariffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBut I\u2019ve already done it. I\u2019ve done a lot,\u201d Trump said, noting that India \u2013 one of the biggest buyers of Russian oil \u2013 was facing a 50 percent tariff on its exports to the US.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cThat\u2019s not an easy thing to do. That\u2019s a big deal and it causes a rift with India,\u201d he told the Fox &amp; Friends programme.\u00a0 \u201cAnd remember this, this is a Europe problem, much more than our problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Russia-Belarus military exercises<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"931\" data-end=\"1252\">Trump\u2019s comments and the Kremlin statement came as Russia and Belarus began large-scale military exercises, raising alarm across NATO\u2019s eastern flank just days after Warsaw accused Moscow of sending attack drones across Polish airspace, a major escalation that sent shivers through Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The Zapad 2025 manoeuvres, which run from Friday until Tuesday, are taking place as Russian forces continue their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aljazeera.com\/news\/2025\/9\/11\/russias-putin-hails-war-advances-ukraine-retakes-parts-of-donetsk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">slow advance<\/a> in Ukraine and intensify air attacks on Ukrainian cities. The Kremlin insists the drills were planned well before the drone incident.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe objectives of the drills are to improve the skills of commanders and staffs, the level of cooperation and field training of regional and coalition groupings of troops,\u201d Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defence said on Telegram.<\/p>\n<p>Peskov stressed the exercises, including those near the Polish border, \u201care not aimed against any other country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But tensions are running high. Poland shut its last open border crossings with Belarus overnight, with state media in Minsk showing guards laying barbed wire along the frontier.<\/p>\n<p>Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the coming period as \u201ccritical days\u201d, warning that his country was closer to \u201copen conflict\u201d than at any time since World War II.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis decision to close the border \u2026 is a response to very specific aggressive military exercises against Poland that are starting in Belarus,\u201d Interior Minister Marcin Kierwinski said. \u201cWe are doing this for the safety of our citizens. Russia has been behaving aggressively towards Poland in recent days and for many years \u2026 towards the entire civilised world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"tr-story-p1\">Ukraine\u2019s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha welcomed his Polish counterpart Rados\u0142aw Sikorski in Kyiv before talks on shared security on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAgainst the backdrop of Russia\u2019s escalation of terror against Ukraine and provocations against Poland, we stand firmly together,\u201d Sybiha wrote on X.<\/p>\n<p>Baltic states step up security<\/p>\n<p>Neighbouring Lithuania and Latvia, also NATO members, have stepped up security and announced partial airspace closures. Belarus says the drills will take place near Borisov, east of Minsk.<\/p>\n<p>In Kyiv, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow\u2019s intentions went beyond its war in Ukraine. \u201cThe meaning of such actions by Russia is definitely not defensive and is directed precisely against not only Ukraine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Zapad exercises are normally held every four years. The last, in 2021, mobilised some 200,000 Russian soldiers shortly before Moscow\u2019s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This year\u2019s version is expected to be smaller, as much of Russia\u2019s military remains committed to the battlefield. Belarus initially announced 13,000 soldiers would join, later halving that figure.<\/p>\n<p>Polish officials believe the drills may simulate an attack on the Suwalki corridor \u2013 the narrow stretch of NATO territory linking Poland and Lithuania between Belarus and Russia\u2019s Kaliningrad exclave.
