Police shared an image of the counterfeit currency.<\/p>\n

Police in Strabane are urging business owners to be vigilant when handling cash as counterfeit \u00a320 notes have been circulating in the town.<\/p>\n

The PSNI said there are a number of things shop owners and employees can look out for, including, feeling if the main printing is raised and checking for a bold and clear watermark when the note is held up to the light.<\/p>\n

“Some other things to look out for include checking if the colours are clear and distinct,\u201d police said.<\/p>\n

“Comparing a suspect note against a note which is known to be genuine is also a good way to check. Counterfeit notes are damaging for local businesses so please report any incidents to us straightaway.”<\/p>\n

Businesses were also advised to raise awareness among customers and also to deter criminals, by firstly displaying clear warning signs stating: ‘COUNTERFEIT CURRENCY CHECKS WILL BE CARRIED OUT’<\/p>\n

Police said they should ensure store staff are aware of how to examine notes and have a policy for staff to follow on discovery of a counterfeit note.<\/p>\n

“This should include the retention of the note and contacting the police, with a description of the person passing the suspect banknote,\u201d a statement said.<\/p>\n

\u201cEnsure there are good lighting conditions at cash points.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anyone with any concerns regarding counterfeit notes is urged to call 101.<\/p>\n
