The council continues to monitor the situation closely to ensure that waste does not build up again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Shadow communities secretary Kevin Hollinrake accused Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner of \u201cfailing to stand up to the unions, failing to protect the residents of the UK\u2019s second city\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He added: \u201cFailing to protect the reputation of our nation and now resorting to being bailed out by our brave armed forces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr Hollinrake described the situation as a \u201cnational embarrassment\u201d before claiming the Government risked a return to the Winter of Discontent in the 1970s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">He said: \u201cIt\u2019s clear with this Government that we risk going back to those days.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Mr McMahon said the three logistics advisers provided by the Ministry of Defence \u201chave made a difference\u201d, adding: \u201cThey themselves said that <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham<\/a> is more than capable of making sure that the rounds are collected and the trucks are on the road as of this week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cI need to pull him up on a comment he made \u2013 when he talks about the humiliation of collecting waste from the streets. The \u2018humiliation\u2019 of decent working-class people going out to provide a public service to millions of people across England is not a humiliation, it\u2019s a public service, it\u2019s one that is critical to our nation\u2019s interests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cTo say it\u2019s a job of humiliation, I would say that working-class people, the bin collectors across this country take pride in their work and they deserve more respect than the bloody Opposition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">Former Labour shadow chancellor John McDonnell called on ministers to \u201cconvene the meetings\u201d between <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.birminghammail.co.uk\/all-about\/birmingham-city-council\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Birmingham City Council<\/a> and union officials in order to \u201csecure progress\u201d in the negotiations over the bin strike.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">In response, Mr McMahon said: \u201cThe Government is not the employer of the workforce in Birmingham, the council is the employer of the workforce in Birmingham, and it\u2019s for the employer and the employees to reach an agreement that both can can accept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \">\u201cOf course, we urge both parties to negotiate in good faith.
