Diners in Northumberland<\/a> have been given plenty of food for thought this week, with the news that a restaurant recently named the best in the UK at a national awards, is expanding to open another venue in the region. And it’s just a stone’s throw away from the town that this year was rated the ‘happiest place to live’ in 2025.<\/p>\n

Whether it’s the best places to go for fish and chips in the North East<\/a>, a new buzzed about restaurant <\/a>you need to check out, a top notch breakfast <\/a>or a 10\/10 Sunday dinner, ChronicleLive has got you covered, as well like to write about food and drink a lot. While Newcastle city centre<\/a> has plenty of gems of its own, there are brilliant places to eat spread right across the region to suit all tastes.<\/p>\n

One of them is most definitely Sherkhan in Alnwick, which, as well as taking home the Best in the North East title at this year’s English Curry Awards, beat off some incredibly strong competition from other regions to be the night’s overall winner, with its owners and staff now able to boast that they officially have the best curry restaurant in the country<\/a>. You just need to look at the Google and Trip Advisor reviews for Sherkhan, to know that it’s a place that is held in very high regard by its customers, with people travelling for miles to have a meal there.<\/p>\n

And anyone who loves the food at Sherkhan will soon have a new place to visit, as its owners have confirmed that they will open Zhal Khan in Tweedmouth, just over the water from Berwick, the historic town and the most northerly in England that was declared the ‘happiest place to live in the UK’ by a national newspaper in the spring. Revealing a photo of the outside of the Main Street business, Sherkhan’s Facebook post read: ‘he news everyone has been waiting for!!!! Our sister restaurant Zhal Khan in Tweedmouth is nearly ready for us to open our doors!!! Watch the space for the opening date.’<\/p>\n

The news got a big reaction, with one follower replying: ‘This is great news! The finest Indian food in the UK has spread its wings! Fly high my friends; you are the best by far!’ Echoing those sentiments, another wrote: ‘Best Indian restaurant in the whole country, the people in Tweedmouth are very lucky. Best wishes for your new venture.’<\/p>\n
