A \u201cStand Up to Racism\u201d counter protest is also due to meet nearby, following a highly charged summer in Britain that has seen protests over immigration and free speech.<\/p>\n<p>By midday tens of thousands of protesters were packed into streets south of the River Thames, before heading towards Westminster, seat of the UK parliament.<\/p>\n<p>Protesters march during an anti-immigration rally organized by activist Tommy Robinson in London on Saturday. REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators carried the Union flag of Britain and the red and white St George\u2019s Cross of England, while others brought American and Israeli flags and wore the MAGA hats of U.S. President Donald Trump. They chanted slogans critical of <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/11\/world-news\/uks-starmer-fires-britains-ambassador-to-the-us-peter-mandelson-over-his-links-to-jeffrey-epstein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Prime Minister Keir Starmer<\/a> and carried placards including some saying \u201csend them home\u201d. Some attendees brought children.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018WE BELIEVE IN TOMMY\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Robinson has billed the Unite the Kingdom march as a celebration of free speech. It is also expected to mourn Charlie Kirk, the American conservative activist\u00a0shot dead on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHundreds of thousands already pack the streets of central London as we Unite as one for our freedoms,\u201d Robinson said on X.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, describes himself as a journalist exposing state wrongdoing and counts U.S. billionaire Elon Musk among his supporters. Britain\u2019s biggest anti-immigrant political party, <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/05\/02\/world-news\/nigel-farages-reform-uk-party-wins-mayoral-and-parliamentary-post-in-surge-of-support\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reform UK<\/a>, which has topped opinion polls in recent months, has kept its distance from Robinson, who has several criminal convictions.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands carried flags of England and Britain and packed into the streets south of the River Thames, heading towards Westminster, seat of the UK parliament. In addition to policing the two demonstrations, the force is stretched by high-profile soccer matches and concerts<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey need to stop illegal migration into this country,\u201d a protester said. \u201cWe believe in Tommy.\u201d REUTERS<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will approach them as we do any other protests, policing without fear or favour, ensuring people can exercise their lawful rights but being robust in dealing with incidents or offences should they occur,\u201d said Commander Clair Haynes, who is leading the policing operation.<\/p>\n<p>Haynes said police were aware of a record of \u201canti-Muslim rhetoric and incidents of offensive chanting by a minority\u201d at previous protests, but said London\u2019s communities should not feel like they have to stay at home.<\/p>\n<p>Last Saturday,\u00a0nearly 900 people\u00a0were arrested at a London demonstration <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/08\/10\/world-news\/uk-police-arrest-over-400-at-protest-for-banned-palestine-support-group\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">against a ban on protest group Palestine Action<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Immigration has become the dominant political issue in Britain, eclipsing concerns over a faltering economy, as the country faces a record number of asylum claims. More than 28,000 migrants have arrived in small boats across the Channel so far this year.<\/p>\n<p>Red and white English flags\u00a0have proliferated along streets and been painted on roads.
