The city is gearing up to host matches in the 2035 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup, with the UK\u2019s submission to stage the tournament so far unopposed.<\/p>\n<p>If we assume the UK will land the appointment, then venues throughout England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland will have the chance to bid to host up to seven matches each.<\/p>\n<p>Councillors are expected to approve the city making a formal bid at an executive meeting next Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Potential venues need to meet set criteria in terms of stadium and supporting infrastructure, which puts Leeds on a front foot. The redevelopment of Elland Road is already underway, with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.placeyorkshire.co.uk\/lufc-submit-elland-road-overhaul-plans\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expansion plans lodged in July<\/a> by LUFC and a refreshed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.placeyorkshire.co.uk\/gallery-and-finally-leeds-moves-into-the-premier-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hospitality offering from DT Sports<\/a> unveiled last week.<\/p>\n<p>Cities and towns bidding to host matches in the 2035 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup are expected to provide funding of up to \u00a310m, but estimates predict a similar amount generated via tourism for each match held, meaning a potential return of approximately \u00a370m to the city.<\/p>\n<p>Leeds City Council\u2019s executive member for adult social care, active lifestyles and culture cllr Salma Arif said: \u201cThe possibility of Leeds and Elland Road hosting matches in a football world cup is hugely exciting and so we are delighted to be making our bid to be a host venue working with Leeds United and our partners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWomen\u2019s football is booming at all levels following the incredible success of the Lionesses, which is fantastic to see in terms of inspiring people of all ages to lead healthy and active lifestyles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd as a city Leeds has a proven track-record for hosting major international events, so we look forward to being part of this bidding process and hearing on the next steps in due course.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leeds United chief business officer Morrie Eisenberg said: \u201cWe are thrilled at the prospect of bringing 2035 FIFA Women\u2019s World Cup matches to Elland Road, which would be fantastic for both the club and the city.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs part of our vision to enhance Elland Road, which would put it amongst the elite stadia in Europe, we want to host Premier League football and world-class events, and this is an amazing opportunity to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe women\u2019s game has enjoyed huge growth over the past decade, which will only continue over the coming years and we want Elland Road to be part of that legacy, this is another example of the city and club coming together to drive positive impact for the Leeds community.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"But will it score?
