But that\u2019s not who the Russian president will be worrying about.<\/p>\n<p>With Russia\u2019s liberal opposition decimated, a small but vocal group of nationalists now presents the biggest threat to his rule, said Petrov. And he has promised them a grandiose victory, not only over Ukraine but over what the Kremlin calls \u201cthe collective West.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a desire among the hawkish part of the military-political establishment to destroy NATO,\u201d Alexander Baunov, a former Russian diplomat now a senior fellow at the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?app=desktop&amp;v=WxVrrBDkH2s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told<\/a> DW\u2019s Russian service. \u201cTo show NATO is worthless.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Since Putin met with Trump in Alaska last month in what the U.S. president had touted as a summit dedicated to striking a ceasefire, Moscow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/after-testing-drone-defenses-russia-tested-nato-disinformation-response\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/after-testing-drone-defenses-russia-tested-nato-disinformation-response\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has ramped up<\/a> its campaign of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/russia-hybrid-warfare-defense-substantial-casualties-james-appathurai-nato\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hybrid warfare<\/a> against Europe, according to military analysts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Before Wednesday\u2019s incursion, Russian drones had repeatedly ventured into Polish airspace from neighboring Belarus, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MassDara\/status\/1965813432227356853\" target=\"_blank\">circling<\/a> cities before turning back.
