For someone who dreams without limits, the first attempt can often bring setbacks. But for world director Dominic Arun, early failures only fueled his determination to rise. After his debut film \u2018Tharangam\u2019, eight years passed before he returned with \u2018Mass Re-entry\u2019, Malayalam cinema\u2019s first female-centric superhero film, also known as \u2018Lokah – Chapter One: Chandra\u2019. Since it explored an entirely new theme, there were natural concerns about how audiences would receive it. Yet the film has moved forward with support far beyond expectations, establishing a universe that Dominic had long envisioned.<\/p>\n
Shaking off the disappointment of his debut took time. Over the years, Dominic wrote several scripts, many ambitious projects, but none progressed. Then, with the arrival of COVID, discussions around \u2018Lokah\u2019 began in earnest, and the story quickly became the only one on his mind. What eventually expanded the scope of the film was the involvement of Dulquer Salmaan. While Dominic had approached several producers, the idea of a female-centric film and the significant budget raised doubts. Cinematographer Nimish Ravi was the first to introduce the project to Dulquer, and when Dominic presented the full script, Dulquer came on board immediately. The clarity with which Dominic envisioned the growth of the film convinced him that this was a project that had to happen. From the beginning, Mammootty was brought into the picture to play the mentor figure. Once he understood the story, he agreed to join after completing his current commitments, later lending his voice and presence to the character. The transformation from a Yakshi-inspired concept to a full-fledged superhero narrative was a careful evolution. The original idea was rooted in a Yakshi story, incorporating elements akin to Western vampire folklore, creating a world and characters that audiences could connect with on a familiar yet extraordinary level.<\/p>\n
The success of \u2018Lokah\u2019 is a testament to teamwork. Despite a limited budget, the production team brought meticulous planning to every scene, making even the grandest moments possible within constraints. Jakes Bijoy\u2019s background score, combined with stellar performances from Kalyani, Naslen, and the entire cast, elevated the film. Durga C. Vinod\u2019s portrayal of Neeli\u2019s childhood, involving challenging shoots, was accomplished with full support from her family.<\/p>\n
Dominic has carefully designed \u2018Lokah\u2019 as a universe where every character has a purpose. The story begins with Neeli, and as backstories and plots unfold, each instalment will reveal more.
