For the first time since 2010, the government has released a league table comparing NHS trusts across England.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The football-style table has been brought back after they were scrapped by the government 15 years ago, with the purpose of beginning a \u2018new era of transparency and accountability in the NHS\u2019 and to \u2018drive up standards\u2019. Each trust has been assessed\u00a0on\u00a030 different metrics, including ambulance wait times, finances, A&E wait times, cancer treatment and waits for diagnostic tests \u2013\u00a0the lower their score, the better their performance.<\/p>\n
Once those factors\u00a0were\u00a0assessed, the hospitals were organised into four \u2018segments\u2019.\u00a0The top performers were put into segment one and the worst into segment four. Any trusts facing financial issues couldn\u2019t\u00a0rank any higher than segment three.\u00a0<\/p>\n
So, now that we\u2019ve established how the ranking works, let\u2019s take a look at how London\u2019s NHS trusts fared. With a score of 1.39, Moorfields Eye Hospital<\/strong> was ranked the best hospital in London and the best in the whole of\u00a0England.\u00a0<\/p>\n In July, Moorfields (which is considered one of the best eye hospitals in the world) was the 10th best performer in England for patients waiting less than 18 weeks for elective care, third for providing diagnostic tests within six weeks and second for A&E patients seen to within four hours.<\/p>\n The\u00a0Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital<\/strong> in\u00a0the London Borough of Harrow\u00a0followed closely behind on the ranking with a score of 1.48, while the Royal Marsden<\/strong>\u00a0in Chelsea,\u00a0<\/strong>a hospital specialising in cancer care, was London\u2019s third best and the sixth best in England.\u00a0<\/p>\n At the other end of the spectrum, the Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust<\/strong> was the lowest ranking London hospital and\u00a0105th out of 135 in England. The Royal Free<\/strong> in Hampstead was the capital\u2019s second-worst, ranking 95th.\u00a0<\/p>\n Heath secretary Wes Streeting said that the purpose of the table, which will be\u00a0updated every three months, is to better inform the public about the service they\u2019re using. But some argue that a single overall rating of a hospital does not truly\u00a0represent\u00a0how \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018bad\u2019 it is, and could push patients to completely avoid poorly rated health centres.\u00a0<\/p>\n Streeting said: \u2018We must be honest about the state of the NHS to fix it. Patients and taxpayers have to know how their local NHS services are doing compared to the rest of the country.<\/p>\n \u2018These league tables will identify where urgent support is needed and allow high-performing areas to share best practices with others, taking the best of the NHS to the rest of the NHS.<\/p>\n \u2018Patients know when local services aren\u2019t up to scratch and they want to see an end to the postcode lottery \u2013 that\u2019s what this government is doing.\u2019<\/p>\n London NHS trusts ranked best to worst<\/p>\n
