As the Duke of Sussex <\/a>works to build bridges with his family in the hope of returning to the UK more frequently, his wife Meghan<\/a> is said to be bracing herself, \u201cthreatened\u201d by the prospect of stepping back into the royal fold, as OK! reveals<\/a>. Last week, Harry, 41, enjoyed a successful four-day solo visit to his homeland, meeting up with his father, King Charles<\/a>, for the first time in 19 months.<\/p>\n

Asked how his father was shortly after arriving at a reception for the Invictus Games<\/a>, Harry \u2013 whose historic meeting at Clarence House lasted just 54 minutes \u2013 replied, \u201cYes, he\u2019s great, thank you.\u201d And he couldn\u2019t stop smiling as he joked with guests at the central London reception \u2013 a marked contrast to the more solemn figure seen on previous UK visits.<\/p>\n

Harry\u2019s trip and, crucially, his positive meeting with King Charles<\/a>, sparked hopes that a reconciliation with the rest of his estranged family could be in the pipeline. But after former BBC<\/a> royal correspondent Jennie Bond said that Meghan, 44, \u201cwould feel somewhat threatened by her husband being drawn back into the royal circle\u201d, a leading psychologist has warned that the mum-of-two\u2019s past trauma could be triggered by such a move.<\/p>\n

Meghan has spoken openly about her negative experiences in the UK. In her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey<\/a>, she revealed she felt lonely when she joined the royal family<\/a> and \u201cdidn\u2019t want to be alive any more\u201d, but was refused professional help.<\/p>\n

During the legal case over the publication of the handwritten letter<\/a> from Meghan to her dad, Thomas Markle, documents filed by Meghan\u2019s team revealed she also felt \u201cunprotected by the institution\u201d and \u201cprohibited from defending herself\u201d when she was pregnant with Prince Archie, now six.<\/p>\n

According to psychologist Clare Deacon, Meghan\u2019s traumatic experiences won\u2019t \u201cjust disappear\u201d because she relocated across an ocean. \u201cIt isn\u2019t erased by distance, and even years later, stepping back into a space that once felt emotionally unsafe can activate past fears, doubts, and protective behaviours,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf reconciliation [with the royal family] led to a return or increased UK presence, Meghan could understandably feel conflicted \u2013 torn between duty, identity and the peace she\u2019s built since.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that Meghan might feel at risk \u201cof losing herself again\u201d if she even temporarily steps back into her old life after \u201cfinding her voice and reclaiming her wellbeing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Just last week, a friend of the prince revealed he has not abandoned the fight to bring his family back to the UK<\/a>, telling The Times, \u201cHe wants them to know their family here. He really would like to come back to the UK much more.\u201d<\/p>\n

The report also claimed that Harry is planning an \u201cunder-the-radar\u201d approach to the security issue, and \u201cthe government should expect private \u2018lobbying\u2019 from the prince\u201d to continue. But bringing Archie and Lilibet<\/a>, four, into the equation is likely to be even more unsettling for Meghan.<\/p>\n

Psychologist Clare, founder of therapy and coaching platform Happya, says Meghan\u2019s instincts will be to shield Archie and Lilibet from any pain she has experienced herself, and therefore bringing them to Britain, even for a short visit, would be difficult.<\/p>\n

If a UK visit becomes unavoidable, Clare adds, Meghan needs to \u201cexplore what feels unsafe, separating past experience from present reality\u201d, and set firm boundaries for herself and her kids.<\/p>\n

Harry, 41, has said he \u201cwould love\u201d a reconciliation with his family. But after losing his High Court appeal over his security provisions while in the UK, he said he \u201ccan\u2019t see a world<\/a> in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK\u201d.<\/p>\n

In July, rumours of a possible reconciliation ramped up further after a meeting between senior aides from the King\u2019s office and representatives from Harry and Meghan\u2019s communications team.<\/p>\n

Meredith Maines of the Sussexes\u2019 California-based PR team and her UK counterpart, Liam Maguire, were pictured on the balcony of a private members\u2019 club in London with Tobyn Andreae, the King\u2019s communication secretary, having what were described as \u201csecret peace talks\u201d.<\/p>\n

Last month, Meghan revealed she loves the freedom of living in Montecito, California, branding aspects of her life as a working royal while in the UK as \u201cinauthentic\u201d.<\/a><\/p>\n

Whether the Sussexes ever fully make peace with the royals again may depend not just on Harry\u2019s longing for home, but also on Meghan\u2019s determination never to lose the freedom she fought so hard to reclaim.<\/p>\n
