<\/a>Ricky Hatton, British boxing icon and multiple world champion, dies aged 46<\/p>\n

British boxing legend Ricky Hatton has died at the age 46 after being found at his home in Hyde, Greater Manchester.<\/p>\n

Hatton, who held multiple world championships in the light-welterweight division, as well as one at welterweight during a storied boxing career was one of the most iconic and popular British boxers of all time.<\/p>\n

A police cordon is in place around his home and Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a body had been found at Hatton’s address and that the death was not being treated as suspicious.<\/p>\n

Paddy McGuinness paid emotional tribute to his friend Ricky Hatton, as he announced news of the boxer\u2019s death live on air during his BBC Radio 2 show today.<\/p>\n

After not being heard for a number of minutes, an audibly shaken McGuinness told listeners: \u201cI had to play a couple of songs back-to-back there; I\u2019ve just learned terrible news that a great mate of mine has passed away – Ricky Hatton.\u201d<\/p>\n

The presenter then paid a short tribute to the boxer and his family, before playing Frank Sinatra\u2019s Blue Moon in dedication – a reference to Hatton\u2019s favourite football team Man City.<\/p>\n

An emotional moment before the Manchester derby this afternoon as a minute\u2019s appreciation for Ricky Hatton was conducted.<\/p>\n

Hatton was a huge Man City fan and his team would ultimately go on to beat bitter rivals Man United 3-0<\/p>\n

<\/a>Football stars comment of Hatton’s passing<\/p>\n

Some of England\u2019s biggest football stars have posted comments in light of Hatton\u2019s death.<\/p>\n

\u201cRicky was one of a kind,\u201d wrote former Manchester United and England midfielder David Beckham on Instagram. \u201cJust heartbreaking.\u201d<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, on X (formerly Twitter), another ex-England and Man United star Wayne Rooney – who carried Hatton’s belts into the ring before a fight with Jose Luis Castillo in 2007 -said was \u201cdevastated\u201d and Hatton was a \u201ca legend, a warrior and a great person\u201d.<\/p>\n

And manager of Hatton\u2019s beloved Man City, Pep Guardiola, said Hatton was a “true champion” and “part of the Man City family”.<\/p>\n

Multi-division world champion boxer Marco Antonio Barrera is the latest to pay tribute to Hatton.<\/p>\n

Close friends Hatton and Barrera didn\u2019t fight as professionals but did have an un-scored exhibition bout in 2022.<\/p>\n

\u201cRicky was a once in a lifetime man,\u201d wrote Barrera on social media. \u201cI am eternally grateful I got to share the ring with him. <\/p>\n

\u201cMay he rest in peace, he will be missed deeply. Ricky was my closest friend in boxing. I\u2019ll miss you, my friend. There will only be one Ricky Hatton.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/a>Frank Warren pays tribute<\/p>\n

Boxing promoter Frank Warren \u2013 who worked with Hatton for many years including for his title-winning fight over Tszyu \u2013 has said he is \u201cextremely saddened to learn of the passing\u201d of Hatton.<\/p>\n

\u201cA superbly talented fighter who inspired a generation of young boxers and fans in a way very few had done before due to both his personality and the entertainment he provided in the ring,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom making his debut Widnes in 1997 to then go on to win one of the most historic fights in British boxing history against Kostya Tszyu in Manchester, Ricky will rightly go down as one of the modern greats of this sport.<\/p>\n

Micah Richards was among those to pay tribute to Hatton, calling the news \u201cdevastating\u201d.<\/p>\n

“He’s such a British icon… a true Man City fan, but most importantly he was a man of the people.<\/p>\n

“He was the nicest guy ever – I remember going down to one of his gyms and I was a bit nervous because I didn’t know about boxing and he said ‘just do this’ and he took his time.<\/p>\n

“For him to take the time and effort, I’ve been multiple times for beers with him just talking about football and life.<\/p>\n

“To get this news now is just surreal.”<\/p>\n

Hatton had been preparing for a return to the ring this year, and recently appeared in a video looking sharp ahead of his first bout since 2022.<\/p>\n

A fight against the UAE\u2019s Eisa Al Dah had been scheduled to take place in Dubai on 2 December.<\/p>\n

Hatton produced one of the most storied and impressive career\u2019s in British boxing history, winning 45 of his 48 professional bouts across 15 years.<\/p>\n

Memorable moments for “The Hitman” included title wins against Kostya Tszyu (in 2005 for the IBF and The Ring light-welterweight titles) and Jose Luis Castillo (in 2007 for the vacant WBC International light-welterweight title), while he also beat Juan Urango for the IBF and vacant IBO light-welterweight titles.<\/p>\n

Of his three losses, two came to a pair of the greatest boxers of all time in Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao.<\/p>\n

His last loss came in his final professional bout, to Ukraine’s Vyacheslav Senchenko in 2012.<\/p>\n

Hatton had recently announced his return to boxing, having lined up a fight with the UAE\u2019s Eisa Al Dah on 2 December.<\/p>\n
