Officials at the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/bringing-food-into-great-britain\/print\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> GOV.UK<\/a> website have written to inform travellers that whilst some products are allowed, <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"certain versions may not beLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">certain versions may not be<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">For example, whilst bread is on the green list, if it has any fillings, it is on the red list. There are also a number of restricted items and if you are taking something on this list, you may need a <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/all-about\/travel-deals\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"permitLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">permit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">So what food can you can bring into Great Britain without any restrictions? You can bring in with you, from any <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/travel\/travelbag-sri-lanka-holiday-upgrade-35813115\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"countryLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">country<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ol class=\"NumberedList_numbered-list__oytz_\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"ordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">bread, but not sandwiches filled with meat or dairy products<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">cakes without fresh cream<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">biscuits<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">chocolate and confectionery, but not those made with a lot of unprocessed dairy ingredients<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">pasta and noodles, but not if mixed or filled with meat or meat products<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">packaged soup, stocks and flavourings<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">processed and packaged plant products, such as packaged salads and frozen plant material<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">food supplements containing small amounts of an animal product, such as fish oil capsules<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Restricted items<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_GettyImages-2179424594.jpg\" alt=\"Unrecognizable female tourist with a backpack selecting sushi at a convenience store, showcasing travel and food culture in a busy city setting.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>There may be penalties if you go against the rules<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">While you can bring in a number of products from the UK from any country, the rules on bringing meat, dairy, fish and other animal products differ. This means that what you can bring back from these categories depends on where you\u2019re bringing it from.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The UK Government note that &#8220;there are restrictions on bringing <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/bringing-food-into-great-britain\/meat-dairy-fish-animal-products\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">meat, dairy, fish and animal products<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/bringing-food-into-great-britain\/fruit-vegetables-nuts-seeds\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">fruit, vegetables, nuts and seeds<\/a> into Great Britain from abroad.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">&#8220;If you\u2019re bringing in any food or animal products protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), you may need to <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/bringing-food-into-great-britain\/check-if-you-need-a-cites-permit\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">apply for a CITES permit<\/a>.&#8221; You can <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/cites-imports-and-exports\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">check if you need a CITES permit<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It warns: &#8220;You cannot bring meat or dairy products from any EU country into Great Britain for your own use. This temporary restriction is to help stop the spread of foot and mouth disease after recent outbreaks in Europe. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/government-extends-ban-on-personal-meat-imports-to-protect-farmers-from-foot-and-mouth\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Find out more about the reasons for the ban<\/a>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If you are bringing in food from the EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, the Faroe Islands and Greenland, you can bring in the following for personal use:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">fish<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">poultry, for example chicken, duck, goose and any other products made from these meats<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">other animal products, for example eggs and honey<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Because of animal disease outbreaks, including foot and mouth disease, in the EU, there are temporary restrictions in place for bringing in:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">meat, dairy and animal products from some animals<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">animal products not for human consumption<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">It adds: &#8220;You cannot bring in food from other countries on a connecting flight. You need to properly dispose of any leftover animal products so that livestock, wild boar and other animals cannot eat them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Restrictions on meat, dairy and animal products for human consumption means that you cannot bring in any of the following:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">pork<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">beef<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">lamb<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">mutton<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">goat<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">venison<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">other products made from these meats, for example sausages<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">milk and dairy products like butter, cheese and yoghurt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">The Government advises that each passenger may bring up to 2kg of powdered infant milk, infant food, or medically necessary special food. These items must not require refrigeration before use and must be in their original, branded, unopened packaging unless they are currently in use.<\/p>\n<p>What happens if I break the rules?<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_GettyImages-2220520487.jpg\" alt=\"Red small suitcase, travel bag prepared for moving close-up, a person checks in with luggage at the airport and goes on a trip.\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Travellers have been warned<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If you declare banned food products to Border Force officers at customs, they will be confiscated and destroyed. If you fail to declare them, you could face a fine of up to \u00a35,000 in England or be prosecuted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">Border Force can take away (\u2018seize\u2019) your products if they think:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"UnorderedList_unordered-list__gzblI\" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">you\u2019ve brought something into the country illegally<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">you\u2019ve brought in too much of a restricted product<\/li>\n<li class=\"sc-700e1ff3-0 VljCu\">it\u2019s been cross-contaminated, for example with blood from meat &#8211; if any clothing or a bag the item\u2019s in is contaminated, it\u2019ll be destroyed<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\">If you&#8217;re unsure about any of the items you&#8217;re bringing into the country, speak to a Border Force officer at the customs &#8216;red channel&#8217; or use the red point phone. You can <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/customs-seizures\" target=\"\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">appeal to Border Force<\/a> if you think your products were wrongly seized and destroyed.
