Princess Diana’s iconic – and lonely – photograph at the Taj Mahal has a heartbreaking story behind it.<\/p>\n
Who hasn’t seen the iconic photograph of Princess Diana<\/a> sitting all alone in front of the Taj Mahal<\/a>? Poignant and solitary, the photograph came to symbolise the state of her troubled marriage with Prince Charles<\/a>. According to royal photographer Kent Gavin<\/a>, the story behind it is even more telling. Gavin, in an interview with a media outlet, recalled a moment from an earlier trip to India with Prince Charles.”I’d been on a trip to India with Prince Charles and sat him on that very same cement stool where we posed Diana<\/a> for that picture,” he said. “And at the press conference that evening, Charles said, ‘One day, because this monument is about a man who loved this woman so much that he built this, I’m going to bring my wife back here’.”<\/p>\n That promise, however, was only partially fulfilled.<\/p>\n Years later, during the Prince and Princess of Wales<\/a>‘ 1992 tour of India, Diana, as Charles’s wife, did end up visiting the Taj Mahal \u2014 but alone.<\/p>\n Gavin remembered the moment vividly: “Charles stayed up during a business meeting and Diana came down and sat all on her own, and that picture just about sums up the trouble it was in.”<\/p>\n The couple announced their separation later that same year.
