with some placed in the Republic and others even staying as far as England, Scotland and Wales.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">New figures have revealed that young people in the care of the Western Trust were placed in accommodation in England for 34 nights, the Republic for 11 nights, Scotland for 10 and Wales for 9.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">As of March 2024, there were just under 4,000 children in the care of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/hsc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/hsc\/\">north\u2019s health and social care trusts<\/a> &#8211; &#x2013; Co Down toddler with special connection to golf bumps into Rory McIlroy at Irish Open\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1757917632_625_7D77RLQB6VGY3FMSKMMXZGRE7A.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/woman-in-hospital-with-head-injuries-after-sunday-afternoon-assault-CQ6BXPZWARF7RAK4RGE3LX2VMM\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Woman in hospital with head injuries after Sunday afternoon assault\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/E2GVPF2JP5PZ7KX6CPVWSA2DEA.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Looked after children, which are also referred to as children in care, are young people who have been provided accommodation for a continuous period of more than 24 hours. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/department-of-health\/\">Department of Health (DoH)<\/a> says its trusts only places children under 16 in regulated settings such as residential homes or foster care.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a series of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/freedom-of-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/freedom-of-information\/\">Freedom of Information (FOI)<\/a> responses to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/aontu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/aontu\/\">Aont\u00fa representative Emmet Doyle<\/a>, varying details of the types of accommodation children in care over 16 were placed, how long they were placed and how much was spent over the past five years were provided. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Responses from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/western-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/western-trust\/\">Western<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/south-eastern-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/south-eastern-trust\/\">South Eastern<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/belfast-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/belfast-trust\/\">Belfast trusts<\/a> show that children in care and accompanying staff spent at least 63,000 nights in hotels, B&amp;Bs or rental properties over the past five years, with total figures likely to be even higher when taking into account the remaining two trusts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">One accommodation provider within the South Eastern Trust was used for just under 40,000 nights between 2020 and mid-2025. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The Western Trust said it had used AirBnB accommodation for 94 nights, meanwhile the South Eastern Trust disclosed that accommodation in London was required for one night to ensure the safety of an unaccompanied asylum seeking child who absconded to London.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In the Belfast Trust, private rentals were used for 12,800 nights, hotels for 302 nights and one person was placed in a B&amp;B for 46 nights. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Total spend across the Western, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/southern-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/southern-trust\/\">Southern<\/a> and South Eastern trusts was over \u00a31.4m, with just over \u00a31m of this figure from the Western Trust alone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/northern-trust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/tags\/northern-trust\/\">Northern Trust<\/a> only revealed that it used accommodation within its area. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Mr Doyle raised concerns about \u201cthe safeguarding mechanisms in place for these young people in being moved from pillar to post, especially given that many of them will have been removed from their parents due to serious issues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cHow can it be good for a child to be accommodated in hotels with what I can only assume was a social worker either sleeping in the same room or nearby? <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"Children in care\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/S52FAJ3B3FHDRIKEASDF52W7UI.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"454\"\/>The Department of Health said that it only places children under 16 in &#8220;regulated settings such as residential homes or foster care&#8221;
