data-qa=\"BaseLink-renderAnchor-StyledAnchor\" rel=\"noopener\">signs of strain<\/a> in August, as sluggish domestic demand, headwinds from the US trade war and a prolonged property downturn continued to weigh on several major indicators.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Retail sales, a major gauge of consumption, rose by 3.4 per cent in August from a year earlier, missing the 3.82 per cent forecast in a poll by financial data provider Wind and down from July\u2019s 3.7 per cent growth, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed on Monday.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Fu Linghui, spokesperson for the bureau, said the economy was \u201cgenerally stable\u201d in August, but cautioned that \u201cmany unstable and uncertain factors in the external environment\u201d remained, with the economy \u201cconfronted with multiple risks and challenges\u201d.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">\u201cWe must fully implement macro policies, focus on keeping employment, businesses, market and expectations stable, and deepen reform and opening up and innovation, so as to foster steady and healthy economic development,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">Industrial output grew by 5.2 per cent year on year in August, compared to 5.7 per cent growth in July, falling short of Wind\u2019s 5.75 per cent estimate.<\/p>\n<p datatype=\"p\" data-qa=\"Component-Component\" class=\"e8zc9q40 css-1c6uqr6 ec74h0k1\">National fixed-asset investment rose by 0.5 per cent in the first eight months of 2025, missing Wind\u2019s forecast of 1.29 per cent, following a 1.6 per cent gain in the first seven months of the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"China\u2019s
