MPs have questioned why SNP<\/a> ministers are spending \u00a32.3 million<\/a> a year on Glasgow\u2019s<\/a> drugs <\/a>\u201cfix room\u201d when cheaper options could save lives.<\/p>\n

Westminster\u2019s Scottish Affairs Committee found Scottish taxpayers <\/a>are forking out for a \u201cgold standard\u201d drug consumption room with showers and laundry facilities \u2014 when \u201cless sophisticated\u201d options are available.<\/p>\n

The facility is designed to help drug users.<\/p>\n

They pointed to a successful scheme in Lisbon, Portugal, where a room costs less than \u00a3250,000 a year and mobile vans around \u00a3100,000 annually.<\/p>\n

A report to the committee said: \u201cOther facilities could provide more cost-effective solutions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Drugs Policy Minister Maree Todd said: \u201cThe Thistle has been recognised by the Global Commission on Drug Policy and has saved lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Scotland has Europe\u2019s highest drugs deaths with 1,017 recorded last year.<\/p>\n

We previously reported how cops are probing a \u201cbad batch\u201d drug tragedy which left one man dead and three people seriously ill.<\/p>\n

Mercy crews raced to the emergency at the stairwell of\u00a0city centre flats but the 52-year-old couldn\u2019t be saved.<\/a><\/p>\n

It sparked the closure of a street in Glasgow\u2019s Cowcaddens area on Monday night.<\/p>\n

A source said: \u201cIt appears there\u2019s been a bad batch of whatever they took.<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s unusual for several users to fall ill at the same time.\u201d<\/p>\n

A local added: \u201cIt\u2019s a known place for drug use unfortunately.<\/p>\n

Officers have confirmed that enquiries are ongoing into the incident.<\/p>\n

But they insisted there is no risk to the wider public.<\/p>\n

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: \u201cAround 8.10pm on Monday, 8 September, 2025, officers were called to a report of a group of people having taken unwell on Cambridge Street, Glasgow.<\/p>\n

\u201cEmergency services attended, and a 52-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin is aware.<\/p>\n

\u201cA 37-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition.<\/p>\n

\u201cA 38-year-old woman and a 52-year-old man were treated by ambulance staff at the scene.<\/p>\n
