{"id":427401,"date":"2025-09-15T22:57:26","date_gmt":"2025-09-15T22:57:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/427401\/"},"modified":"2025-09-15T22:57:26","modified_gmt":"2025-09-15T22:57:26","slug":"council-rejects-move-to-build-flats-saying-it-would-block-neighbours-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/427401\/","title":{"rendered":"Council rejects move to build flats saying it would block neighbours\u2019 light"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aiir-c-news-figure__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/68c830f0073f9.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"aiir-c-news-article__abstract\">\n            A plan to add two storeys to a shop to make way for new flats has been rejected by a council.\n        <\/p>\n<p>The work to the former Hateley Heath Post Office and McColl\u2019s convenience store in Jowetts Lane, West Bromwich, would have seen the building\u2019s first floor extended and a second storey added to make way for seven new flats.<\/p>\n<p>However, planners at Sandwell Council have rejected the application saying it would be too big and add to parking problems.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sandwell Council said a three-storey building would be \u201cout-of-scale\u201d and \u201cunduly prominent\u201d and would lead to a loss of light and outlook for neighbours.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The local authority\u2019s planners also said the extensions and flats plans did not include any parking spaces so it would add to congestion problems in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Planners at Sandwell Council had criticised the plan for its height before a decision was made \u2013 saying the extra two storeys were \u201cexcessive\u201d and \u201cwholly out of character.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The local authority\u2019s highways officers submitted an objection saying the flats would need at least eight parking spaces and none would be provided under the proposals.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Parking issues in Jowetts Lane and neighbouring roads had been raised as an ongoing problem when the empty shop last went before planners in November 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The shop has been the subject of several planning applications and enforcement action from the council in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Demolition work to re-open the Jowetts Lane shop had finally been approved by the local authority in 2024 \u2013 nearly 18 months after it had already been carried out by the shop owner.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sandwell Council\u2019s planning committee approved a \u2018retrospective\u2019 application last November for the demolition job which had already started in March 2023 \u2013 work that attracted the attention of enforcement officers at the council following a complaint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The council stepped in and told UK Wide Real Estate that the extent of the work needed planning permission leaving the makeover half-finished.<\/p>\n<p>A decision had been deferred twice with councillors eventually visiting the site only to discover that the drawings in the application did not match what had been built.
