{"id":427551,"date":"2025-09-16T00:21:46","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T00:21:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/427551\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T00:21:46","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T00:21:46","slug":"beloved-edinburgh-donut-shop-closes-its-doors-for-good","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/427551\/","title":{"rendered":"Beloved Edinburgh donut shop closes its doors for good"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EDINBURGH bakery and donut shop, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kilteddonut.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kilted Donut<\/a>, has been forced to close its doors for good due to \u201congoing economic uncertainty\u201d and \u201cfamily health challenges\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The business ran three shops in Leith, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morningside,_Edinburgh\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Morningside<\/a> and Grassmarket and was beloved by locals for its large, hearty donuts and baked goods.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>From its humble beginnings in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stockbridgemarket.com\/leith.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leith<\/a>, the owners managed to expand to three locations across the city but, despite their successes, they have now been forced to close their doors for good.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Earlier in the year, they were forced to close down their Morningside branch just months after expanding into the Southside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/KILTED_DONUT_CLOSURE_DN01.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"4f5856\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #4f5856;\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"463\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"The Kilted Donuts branch in Grassmarket, Edinburgh (C) Google\" class=\"wp-image-1249312 not-transparent\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/KILTED_DONUT_CLOSURE_DN01.jpg\"\/><\/a>The Kilted Donuts branch in Grassmarket, Edinburgh (C) Google<\/p>\n<p>In a social media post today, they announced the sad news, and thanked all the patrons they attracted over the years and the Edinburgh community for \u201cevery visit, every kind word, and every shared moment\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kilted Donut was established in early 2017 after husband-and-wife duo Mark Anderson and Lena Wollan returned from their honeymoon in New Orleans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On holiday, they fell in love with a donut shop that they would visit every morning.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They thought this kind of donut-specialised establishment represented a gap in the market in Edinburgh, and they decided to open their own donut shop in Edinburgh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After testing dough recipes on family and friends, they began operating stalls at local markets in Leith, Pitt Street, and Balerno.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>They landed on a permanent site in Leith, where their business expanded \u2013 eventually employing 24 people in Edinburgh.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Their Grassmarket location flourished while their ill-fated expansion into Morningside was forced to shutter its doors just eight months after opening.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.deadlinenews.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/KILTED_DONUT_CLOSURE_DN02.jpg?ssl=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\" data-dominant-color=\"74695d\" data-has-transparency=\"false\" style=\"--dominant-color: #74695d;\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"696\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml,%3Csvg%20xmlns=\" http:=\"\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1249313 not-transparent\" data-lazy- data-lazy- data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/KILTED_DONUT_CLOSURE_DN02.jpg\"\/><\/a>The selection of donuts available from Kilted Donuts (C) Kilted Donuts \/ X<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted to Instagram, they said: \u201cAfter a lot of soul-searching and with heavy hearts, we\u2019ve made the incredibly difficult decision to close Kilted Donut.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe mix of ongoing economic uncertainty and family health challenges has made it impossible for us to keep going the way we\u2019d hoped.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are deeply grateful for your support over the years \u2014 for every visit, every kind word, and every shared moment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis community has meant the world to us, and we couldn\u2019t have come this far without you.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you for coming along on the journey and making it a special one! We have so many great memories from the past 8 years.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Many took to social media to express their sadness and well-wishes to the company.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One said: \u201cThis is so incredibly sad, but I completely understand.
