{"id":427817,"date":"2025-09-16T02:50:21","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T02:50:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/427817\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T02:50:21","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T02:50:21","slug":"aidia-studio-tops-mexican-market-with-parabolic-roof-system","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/427817\/","title":{"rendered":"Aidia Studio tops Mexican market with parabolic roof system"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>International design practice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/aidia-studio\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aidia Studio<\/a> has lofted a wave-like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/vaulted-ceilings\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vaulted<\/a> roof with green details over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dezeen.com\/tag\/markets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">market<\/a> in Quintana Roo, Mexico.<\/p>\n<p>The 7,700-square metre (82,882-square foot) Mercado Nicol\u00e1s Bravo is characterised by a series of inverted umbrella shapes that sail above individual market stalls on a 3.2-acre site on the Yucatan peninsula.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2247606 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mercado-nicolas-bravo-quintana-roo-mexico-aidia-studio_dezeen_2364_col_3-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Mercado Nicol\u00e1s Bravo\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>Aidia Studio has completed a market in Quintana Roo, Mexico<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The project is a testament to our commitment to a resilient architecture approach, prioritising construction techniques and materials that ensure minimal upkeep throughout the building&#8217;s lifespan,&#8221; said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aidia-studio.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Aidia Studio<\/a>, which has offices in London and Mexico City.<\/p>\n<p>Completed in 2024, the market is dedicated to empowering the local community through arts and crafts as well as a place to offer fresh produce to tourists visiting the Mayan archaeological sites nearby.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2247623 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mercado-nicolas-bravo-quintana-roo-mexico-aidia-studio_dezeen_2364_col_19-852x1278.jpg\" alt=\"Mercado Nicol\u00e1s Bravo in Mexico\" width=\"1576\" height=\"2364\"  \/>It is topped with an undulating, parabolic roof<\/p>\n<p>Part of a government-funded program to improve underdeveloped Mexican municipalities, the market provides a link between the tourism industry and the needs of the less than 5,000 Nicol\u00e1s Bravo residents.<\/p>\n<p>The studio arranged 50 market stalls in 14 enclosed blocks on an 8-metre by 8-metre (26-foot by 26-foot) grid.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2247618 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mercado-nicolas-bravo-quintana-roo-mexico-aidia-studio_dezeen_2364_col_14-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Covered market in Quintana Roo, Mexico\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>50 market stalls were arranged in 14 blocks<\/p>\n<p>Doubling as a community centre for cultural events and educational workshops, the building was constructed with four elements: a lightweight steel structure, reinforced convert slabs and parapets, concrete blocks and clay bricks.<\/p>\n<p>The masonry and concrete are pigmented with a natural sand colour that offsets the light olive green tone of the trim and market doors, continuing the colours of the surrounding palm trees throughout the market.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2247609 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/mercado-nicolas-bravo-quintana-roo-mexico-aidia-studio_dezeen_2364_col_6-852x568.jpg\" alt=\"Parabolic roof system\" width=\"2364\" height=\"1576\"  \/>The building is constructed with a lightweight steel structure, concrete blocks and clay bricks<\/p>\n<p>Raised above the market stalls like a tree canopy, the undulating roof \u2013 constructed from a series of hyperbolic paraboloid forms \u2013 is broken only by two planted courtyards.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This not only reflects our dedication to form-finding for architectural aesthetics and structural integrity but also integrates a biophilic design philosophy, seamlessly blending the structure with its natural surroundings,&#8221;
