Klimt, Heads to Sotheby&#8217;s"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSotheby\u2019s has landed one of the biggest consignments announced yet for the November sales in New York: $400 million in art from the collection of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/leonard-lauder\/\" id=\"auto-tag_leonard-lauder\" data-tag=\"leonard-lauder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Leonard Lauder<\/a>, who died in July at 92.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe crown jewel of the tranche of artworks is likely to be the crown jewel of the November auctions more broadly: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/t\/gustav-klimt\/\" id=\"auto-tag_gustav-klimt\" data-tag=\"gustav-klimt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gustav Klimt<\/a>\u2018s Portrait of Elisabeth Lederer (1914\u201316). It is about $100 million more expensive than a Mark Rothko abstraction headed from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/market\/christies-robert-patricia-weis-collection-sale-1234750554\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Robert F. Weis and Patricia G. Ross Weis to Christie\u2019s<\/a>, where it has been given a $50 million estimate. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Weis collection is expected to generate $180 million for Christie\u2019s, which also secured 20 works from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/market\/elaine-wynn-francis-bacon-lacma-christies-november-auction-1234751189\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the collection of the late Elaine Wynn<\/a>, including paintings by Richard Diebenkorn, J. M. W. Turner, and Joan Mitchell that are expected to collectively sell for $75 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Elisabeth Lederer portrait seems poised to shatter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/klimt-masterpiece-lady-with-a-fan-sells-for-94-3-million-achieving-european-auction-record-1234672701\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Klimt\u2019s auction record<\/a>, which was set in 2023 by the artist\u2019s painting Dame mit F\u00e4cher (Lady with a Fan), from 1917\u201318, which sold for the equivalent of $108.4 million at Sotheby\u2019s in London.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIt is not the only expensive Klimt from Lauder\u2019s holdings headed to Sotheby\u2019s, either. Two landscapes from Klimt\u2014one depicting a meadow and dated 1906, the other showing a forest and dated 1917\u2014will come to auction, too, with estimates of $80 million\u2013$100 million and $70 million\u2013$90 million, respectively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tBeyond the Klimts, the Lauder sale will also include six bronzes by Henri Matisse collectively worth $30 million, a $20 million Edvard Munch painting, and an Agnes Martin painting valued at more than $10 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn total, some 55 artworks from Lauder\u2019s holdings will soon be sold by Sotheby\u2019s, whose November sales will inaugurate its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/sothebys-to-open-its-new-breuer-building-hq-on-november-8-with-blockbuster-exhibition-1234749349\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new space<\/a> at a Marcel Breuer\u2013designed building that was once home to the Whitney Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLauder, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/news\/leonard-lauder-dead-estee-lauder-art-collecting-1234745163\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">frequently ranked on the ARTnews Top 200 Collectors list<\/a> prior to his death, himself had a significant connection to the Whitney. He was a trustee at that museum from 1977 to 2011, and was chairman emeritus until his death in June.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe Lauder sale was announced on Monday, just a few days after the Guardian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2025\/sep\/11\/sothebys-auction-house-losses-more-than-double\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that Sotheby\u2019s had lost $248 million. In August, a long-form New Yorker profile of Sotheby\u2019s owner Patrick Drahi suggested behind-the-scenes discord, with one unnamed former executive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artnews.com\/art-news\/market\/sothebys-fee-structure-trump-tariffs-1234749865\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">comparing his leadership to Trump\u2019s<\/a>. (The Guardian reported that despite rising losses, the auction house shed just 24 employees between 2023 and 2024.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe losses come amid more widespread uncertainty\u2014and spirited debate\u2014about the state of the art market. But, speaking to the Times, Sotheby\u2019s chief executive seemed confident, saying of the Lauder sale, \u201cI think we\u2019re going to make history with this collection.
