{"id":429085,"date":"2025-09-16T14:30:37","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T14:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/429085\/"},"modified":"2025-09-16T14:30:37","modified_gmt":"2025-09-16T14:30:37","slug":"good-hopes-paediatric-diabetic-team-comes-out-on-top","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/429085\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Hope&#8217;s paediatric diabetic team comes out on top"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\t\t\tTHERE were smiles all round as a specialist paediatric diabetes team was named as one of the best.<\/p>\n<p>The team at Good Hope Hospital came out on top for the measure of HbA1c, which reflects a patient\u2019s average blood sugar levels over the past two to three months, for the year ending March 2024 by the National Paediatric Diabetes Audit (NPDA).\n<\/p>\n<p>The NPDA measures the health outcomes and experiences of children with diabetes in 171 clinics delivering this care in England and Wales.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Dr Catherine Field, consultant clinical psychologist, said: \u201cThe whole team are delighted to have achieved such good results, as well as the lowest average Hba1c achieved by any clinic to date.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis reflects the hard work and dedication of our patients and their families, who have believed and trusted in us to guide them to really good diabetes management and long-term health.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The team is recognised by the audit as being early adopters, and now the highest users, of hybrid closed-loop pumps in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The pumps, which use artificial intelligence-supported technology, are offered to every child and young person and the recent audit shows a staggering 90 per cent take-up rate.<\/p>\n<p>The closed-loop insulin pump combines a continuous glucose monitor and a smart insulin pump to automatically adjust the insulin delivered based on the patient\u2019s real-time glucose readings.<\/p>\n<p>This technology aims to mimic the function of a healthy pancreas by safely automating the process as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>The team\u2019s patient-centered approach also extends to organising various social activities for their patients, including summer picnics, regular \u2018walk and talk\u2019 sessions in local parks, Christmas party, summer camps and a dedicated information session for patients transitioning to secondary school.<\/p>\n<p>Ed Hewins has been a patient at Good Hope\u2019s paediatric diabetes unit for just over a year.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The 16-year-old said: \u201cThe team are supportive, approachable, and treat you as a person, not as a diagnosis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey encourage you to help solve problems and overcome challenges yourself, so you are in control of how you manage your diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust two weeks after my diagnosis, I was due to complete my bronze Duke of Edinburgh\u2019s Award expedition in the Peak District \u2013 I didn\u2019t know whether I would be able to go. The team made me believe that I could do it and helped me put everything in place so that I could complete the challenge. I\u2019ve since gone on to achieve my silver medal too!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Simon Jarvis, hospital executive director at Good Hope Hospital, added: \u201cI\u2019m incredibly proud of the paediatric diabetes team and the difference they make to the lives of so many children, young people, and their families, living with diabetes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTheir approach, which really puts patients in the driving seat, has shown amazing results in this recent audit.
