The Mirror US reports<\/a>.<\/p>\nIt has been reported that he died early this morning (Tuesday, September 16).<\/p>\n
The 89-year-old was best known for Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President\u2019s Men.<\/p>\n
It has been reported he died in his sleep at his home in Utah.<\/p>\n
He was born on 18 August 1936 in Santa Monica, California and became one of the most prominent film stars of the 1960s and 1970s.<\/p>\n
His breakthrough role was in Neil Simon\u2019s Broadway hit Barefoot in the Park in 1963, which led to his film debut in War Hunt and meteoric success as a leading man in Hollywood.<\/p>\n
The actor-turned-director won an Oscar for directing Ordinary People in 1980 and received an honorary lifetime achievement Oscar in 2002.<\/p>\n
He also appeared in several TV shows, such as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, The Twilight Zone, and Route 66.<\/p>\n
He announced his retirement from acting in 2018, after starring in The Old Man and the Gun before making a cameo appearance in the TV show Dark Winds, on which he worked as an executive producer.<\/p>\n
Throughout his career, Redford was regarded as both a Hollywood icon and a strong supporter of environmental and political causes.<\/p>\n
During the last decade or so of his life, although he had formally retired from acting after The Old Man & the Gun (2018), he made a notable cameo in the television series Dark Winds (2025) at his own request for a closed set.<\/p>\n
He also served as executive producer on that series, reaffirming his enduring involvement behind the camera.<\/p>\n
As well as an extensive film career, he was deeply committed to environmental causes.<\/p>\n
