{"id":430435,"date":"2025-09-17T05:19:15","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T05:19:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/430435\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T05:19:15","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T05:19:15","slug":"life-in-london-made-me-ill","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/430435\/","title":{"rendered":"Life in London made me ill"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t\t\t\t\tGeorgina Shaw has embraced quality produce, outdoor activities and a better work-life balance on the Costa del Sol\t\t\t\t\t                <\/p>\n<p>A <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/left-london-cheaper-life-3714276?srsltid=AfmBOoo3EXifyt1MgXUuWUr2KrAl7jyRg4i2VW9DknAJ86BZG3NcEhHT&amp;ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Londoner<\/a> who moved to Spain 17 years ago says her health has \u201cwildly\u201d improved because her lifestyle is much less stressful.<\/p>\n<p>Georgina Shaw, 46, believes the relentless <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/inews-lifestyle\/left-london-scotland-space-not-settled-3825526?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pace of life in the UK capital<\/a> was making her ill, before she decided to accept a job on the <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/uk-spain-spend-summers-britain-escape-tourists-3885973?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Costa del Sol<\/a> in 2008.<\/p>\n<p>She had been looking for a new PR job in London when a friend suggested she consider working abroad. A few weeks after uploading her CV to a Spanish recruitment agency, she accepted a job offer as a campaigns director of a PR agency and was on her way to the city of Marbella.<\/p>\n<p>New FeatureIn ShortQuick Stories. Same trusted journalism.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was hard to make the decision to leave, but my mum asked how I would feel if I didn\u2019t go,\u201d Shaw told The i Paper. \u201cI knew I\u2019d always regret not trying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"774\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SEI_266245411.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3919533\"  \/>The 46-year-old with her mother, who has now also moved to Spain (Photo: Georgina Shaw)<\/p>\n<p>Although nervous about the move, she said the contrast between the weather in the province of <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/news\/world\/overcrowded-malaga-tourist-saturation-point-3533786?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">M\u00e1laga<\/a> in southern Spain and Britain\u2019s wetter, colder climate quickly showed her that she had made the right decision. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile weather sounds like a small thing, it pervades every part of life,\u201d she said. \u201cWhen I wake up first thing in the morning and the sky is blue and the sun is shining, it brightens your mood. I have so many memories of being in London and leaving the house in the dark and returning in the dark. I was so affected by darkness and cold, and arriving at work wet, cold, and miserable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She recalled waking up on her first morning in <a class=\"post_in-line_link\" href=\"https:\/\/inews.co.uk\/topic\/spain?ico=in-line_link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain<\/a>, having a cup of coffee on the terrace of a friend\u2019s flat overlooking the sea.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought \u2013 this is my life, and I could get used to this,\u201d she said. \u201cI used to walk endlessly up and down the beach, amazed by the place I was now calling home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Within a week of moving to Spain, she met Andy, a British man who would become her husband and father to her child, Lucas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe set up our own business \u2013 Shaw Marketing Services \u2013 and moved out of the centre of Marbella to Manilva, when our son was a toddler,\u201d she said. \u201cWe live in a townhouse on the outskirts of the village, which is around 25-years-old. We have done work on it to modernise it. We\u2019re a 20-minute walk and a five-minute drive to the beach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"428\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SEI_266245408.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3919535\"  \/>Shaw and her husband, Andy, moved from central Marbella to the nearby village of Manilva, when their son Lucas was a toddler (Photo: Georgina Shaw)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wanted a place which offered a more Spanish way of life and a lower cost of living, where our son could connect with the language and the culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Raising a child in a Spanish village, where children are \u201cwelcome wherever,\u201d led to a great family dynamic, she added. \u201cWe never need babysitters. Kids are just running free in the park, having fun. In any restaurant and most bars, you can take children in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her daily life is completely different from when she was constantly on the go in London.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had thought I thrived on stress,\u201d she said. \u201cI got ill in the UK \u2013 developing ulcerative colitis. It caused a lot of problems. It took me moving to Spain to realise the stress of my life was detrimental to my health. Being here has wildly improved my symptoms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Spain, people generally want to live a \u201cgood life\u201d, and are not as focused on work and success as they often are in the UK, she said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"428\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/SEI_266245412.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3919537\"  \/>She says life is much calmer since she left London, and now enjoys a morning coffee from her terrace overlooking the village (Photo: Georgina Shaw)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople understand the importance of family, living well, and taking it easy,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p>This way of living has rubbed off on Shaw, who makes a habit of morning coffees on the terrace, taking her son to school, and logging off by 4pm to spend time with her husband and 13-year-old.<\/p>\n<p>Although she is making less money than she might in the UK, she feels better off because the cost of living is lower, and the weather allows for free, outdoor recreation, including going to the beach for the day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe bought our house that we\u2019re in now \u2013 a four-bedroom townhouse \u2013 for \u20ac120,000 (\u00a3104,000),\u201d she said, noting that the house is now worth more than twice that amount.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe recently installed solar panels, and our latest electric bill \u2013 which includes the electricity to charge our car \u2013 was \u20ac30 (\u00a326),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"427\" width=\"760\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/comp-1757952438.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3919658\"  \/>The 46-year-old says people in Spain are more focused on family, living well, and taking it easy (Photo: Georgina Shaw)<\/p>\n<p>She has found supermarket costs similar to the UK, but the food is much better. \u201cThe quality of the ingredients in a standard shop are very high,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Outstanding wine is significantly cheaper, with Shaw saying she can buy a quality bottle for \u20ac6 (\u00a35).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur money goes a lot further, and it would go further still in other parts of Spain,\u201d she said. \u201cOf course, you can spend a lot on fine dining, but you can still eat cheaply. With the menu del d\u00eda [menu of the day] set lunch menus, you can still have a simple three-course meal with beer or wine for \u20ac10-\u20ac15 (\u00a38-\u00a313).\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Spanish healthcare has been an unexpected benefit of moving, particularly since her parents moved to Spain nearly two years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs my parents were getting older, I was fearful of what the ageing process would mean for my life here,\u201d she said. \u201cThey are getting great healthcare in Spain. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cSadly, my mum had a stroke in February. She was in the hospital for over a month and was so well looked after.
