A further 85 % of residents live within 1km of healthcare and education facilities, and the city boasts hundreds of miles of bike trails.<\/p>\n<p>Its public transport is quick and efficient, but with pedestrian-friendly streets that rank high in safety, it\u2019s easy to see why many prefer to walk around the buzzy Bavarian capital.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a far cry from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/johannesburg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Johannesburg<\/a> in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">South Africa<\/a>, which rounds out the list as the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2025\/04\/26\/europes-least-walkable-city-hills-steep-leave-tourists-backsides-screaming-22978988\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">least walkable city<\/a>. Flight prices are, unsurprisingly, above average if you want to get there in time for the event.<\/p>\n<p>But if you\u2019re willing to miss it and visit a little later, <strong>Metro<\/strong>\u2018s Travel team found one-way <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/easyjet\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">easyJet<\/a> flights for \u00a335 from <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/gatwick-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">London Gatwick<\/a> on 7 October.<\/p>\n<p>What to do and see in Munich\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s plenty to explore in Munich, and many of the city\u2019s top attractions are within walking distance of each other.<\/p>\n<p>At Marienplatz, the city\u2019s central square, you can watch the famous Glockenspiel clock chime from the New Town Hall.<\/p>\n<p>From there, it\u2019s a five-minute walk to Frauenkirche, a restored Gothic church, known for its mysterious \u2018Devil\u2019s Footprint\u2019, a large black footprint on one of its floor tiles.<\/p>\n<p>Just a short stroll from there is the Viktualienmarkt, an open-air food market where you\u2019ll find all sorts of Bavarian delicacies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you fancy a scenic wander, the Englischer Garten stretches from the city centre to the northeastern city limits. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s one of the largest urban parks in the world and comes to life during Oktoberfest. It\u2019s also home to the famous Eisbach river, which surfers flock to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>And, if you need some time off your feet, there are plenty of places to enjoy an affordable snack. According to Introducing Munich, the average cost of a beer is just \u00a33.40, while a pretzel costs less than \u00a31.30.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city is known for its beer halls, where travellers can enjoy Steins filled to the brim with local beer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its most famous location is Hofbr\u00e4uhaus M\u00fcnchen, a 16th-century beer hall and Bavarian restaurant spanning three floors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tTop things to do in Munich\t\t\t<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Munich Marienplatz \u2013 a historic square featuring an iconic clock tower. <\/li>\n<li>English Garden \u2013 sprawling green space featuring beer gardens and scenic spots for picnics. <\/li>\n<li>Residenz Munchen \u2013 a former royal palace showcasing Bavarian crown jewels. <\/li>\n<li>Nymphenburg Palace \u2013 a former royal residence set amidst expansive gardens.<\/li>\n<li>Asmkirche \u2013 Baroque chapel with intricate interiors. <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>It\u2019s popular among tourists and locals, with a 4.3-star rating on Google based on 93,000 reviews. One reviewer, Wesley Wong, dubbed it \u2018one of the most famous dining spots in Munich\u2019, and praised its \u2018classic and lively atmosphere\u2019.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She wrote: \u2018The restaurant itself is massive, with a beautifully designed traditional Bavarian interior that transports you back in time.\u2019\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you can\u2019t find a seat at Hofbr\u00e4uhaus, there\u2019s no shortage of other beer halls. From the Deutsches Museum, the world\u2019s largest museum of science and technology, to the Residenz Museum, one of the most important palace museums in Europe, according to its website, which is home to royal collections.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\tTop museums in Munich\t\t\t<\/p>\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>BMW Museum \u2013 a museum showcasing BMW models.<\/li>\n<li>Residenz Museum \u2013 a former royal palace and the largest in Germany.<\/li>\n<li>Deutsches Museum \u2013 the world\u2019s largest museum of science and technology. <\/li>\n<li>Alte Pinakothek \u2013 a gallery home to renowned artists and impressive sculptures.<\/li>\n<li>Lenbachhaus \u2013 a \u2018gem\u2019 of a museum covering mostly modern art <\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>How to get to Munich\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Munich isn\u2019t exactly a hidden gem. It\u2019s one of the most visited cities in Germany and attracts millions of visitors each year.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There are plenty of ways to reach the Bavarian city from the UK. Several airlines offer flights from London, including <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/british-airways\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">British Airways<\/a>, Lufthansa and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/easyjet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EasyJet<\/a>. The flight takes just under two hours.<\/p>\n<p>The cheapest time to visit is in May, when one-way ticket prices start from \u00a366, according to Skyscanner.<\/p>\n<p>Direct flights are also available from other UK cities, including Manchester. One-way Lufthansa tickets start from \u00a382 in May.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>When is the best time to visit Munich?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most people visit Munich during the shoulder seasons between April and May and from September to October, according to Simply Munich.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The city transforms during spring, the weather is genuinely pleasant, and many start to return to outside spaces, including beer gardens and parks. If you\u2019d prefer to enjoy a stroll in warmer weather, June and July is the time to visit, where temperatures reach beyond 24C.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you want to join in on the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2024\/10\/13\/oktoberfest-become-worlds-largest-folk-festival-21779078\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Oktoberfest festivities<\/a>, of course, October is the time to visit.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The annual festival, which lasts over two weeks, involves large steins of beer, tents, concerts and parades, not to mention traditional costumes. You\u2019ll see men wearing lederhosen and women wearing dirndls.<\/p>\n<p>December is also a popular time to visit.
