Plans for a new university library to be built in the shadow of Mancunian Way have been scaled back.<\/p>\n

Manchester Metropolitan University\u2019s (MMU) new All Saints Library, described by university representatives as a \u2018distinct landmark building\u2019, was originally approved by city planners in February, 2024.<\/p>\n

Its approved blueprints were for a 13-storey institution which would also be the home for the university\u2019s special collection museum and the Manchester Poetry Library \u2013 the North West\u2019s first public poetry library.<\/p>\n

Also approved were gallery and events spaces which would both be open to the public.<\/p>\n

But this month, a new screening and scoping report, produced by Deloitte, has been submitted to Manchester City council.<\/p>\n

Within that document, it has ben revealed that the building is now planned to be nine storeys, with resultant floorspace reductions.<\/p>\n

It is understood the revised plans have been developed after the original proposal became unviable amid rising construction costs.<\/p>\n

The 2024 building plans, featuring a striking \u2018zig-zag\u2019 design, were the product of an international competition, the previous planning meeting heard. It was described as \u2018an iconic All Saints architectural gateway to our university\u2019.<\/p>\n

Originally slated for opening for the start of the 2028\/29 academic year, the university is now targeting 2030 as an opening date.<\/p>\n

A MMU spokesperson said: \u201cThe refreshed vision and design of our new library will provide a vibrant learning, research, and collaboration hub at the heart of our campus, fostering creativity and engagement for future generations.<\/p>\n

“Our target opening date remains September 2030.<\/p>\n
