{"id":431764,"date":"2025-09-17T18:16:12","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T18:16:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/431764\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T18:16:12","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T18:16:12","slug":"ex-celtic-loanee-makes-champions-league-history-vs-real-madrid-at-the-bernabeu","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/431764\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Celtic loanee makes Champions League history vs Real Madrid at the Bernabeu"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Marseille played Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The league phase of UEFA\u2019s glamour competition got underway and the 15-time European champions secured a 2-1 win over the French side.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/match\/how-celtic-hero-matt-oriley-fared-for-marseille-against-real-madrid-as-jamie-carragher-fumes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ex-Celtic star Matt O\u2019Riley played for Marseille<\/a> in midfield at the Bernabeu, having joined the club on loan from Brighton &amp; Hove Albion.<\/p>\n<p>O\u2019Riley held his own up against the likes of Federico Valverde and Aur\u00e9lien Tchouam\u00e9ni, with WhoScored delivering a match rating of 6.85 for the Dane.<\/p>\n<p>However, it was another former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/club\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Celtic<\/a> player who grabbed the most headlines for Marseille.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-1087358764-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Timothy Weah of Celtic celebrates scoring his team'St Mirren fourth goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Celtic and St Mirren at Celtic Park\" \/>Photo by Ian MacNicol\/Getty ImagesTimothy Weah becomes first American to score at Bernabeu in Champions League<\/p>\n<p>Who remembers former Celtic loanee <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/timothy-weah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Timothy Weah<\/a>, signed by Brendan Rodgers during his first spell at Parkhead in 2019?<\/p>\n<p>Weah was the man on the scoresheet for Marseille as they took the lead inside 22 minutes, before a Kylian Mbappe double rescued three points for Madrid.<\/p>\n<p>Weah was played in on goal by Mason Greenwood before dispatching a shot past Thibaut Courtouis, sparking gleeful celebrations.<\/p>\n<p>With that goal, Weah made history as he became the first American to score a goal at the Bernabeu in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.67hailhail.com\/tag\/champions-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Champions League<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to CBS after the result, Weah said: \u201cObviously to score at the Bernabeu is a big achievement personally, but to not get the win for the team is disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, I think obviously I\u2019m happy to score my first goal for the club, I think the fans deserved it. But when you leave here without a win, it\u2019s kind of bittersweet. So I would have preferred to win the game.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYeah, it\u2019s a pleasure. I mean, it\u2019s a dream come true. I think as a kid, you dream of moments like that and there\u2019s no better club to do it with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so happy to be here at Marseille and, you know, I just wanted to give the fans something to cheer about. So, you know, I\u2019m super happy and the job doesn\u2019t stop here.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI put this game behind me and now it\u2019s onto the next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>How did Weah fare as a Celtic player?<\/p>\n<p>Weah was only playing for Celtic for a short time between January and May 2019, with Brendan Rodgers leaving shortly after he signed.<\/p>\n<p>He was just 19 at the time but appeared 17 times for the Hoops, scoring four goals and delivering one assist.<\/p>\n<p>His debut came in the Scottish Cup against Airdrieonians and he netted as a substitute, with Celtic winning 3-0 on the day.<\/p>\n<p>Weah helped Celtic win the Scottish Premiership title, but his loan was terminated before he could feature in the Scottish Cup final against Hearts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Marseille played Real Madrid in the Champions League on Tuesday night.
