{"id":431934,"date":"2025-09-17T19:56:11","date_gmt":"2025-09-17T19:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/431934\/"},"modified":"2025-09-17T19:56:11","modified_gmt":"2025-09-17T19:56:11","slug":"monkey-business-in-buncrana-ends-with-safe-return-of-joey-the-capuchin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/431934\/","title":{"rendered":"Monkey business in Buncrana ends with safe return of Joey the Capuchin"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>A curious monkey is home safe and sound after an unexpected adventure in Buncrana this afternoon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Joey the Capuchin was spotted monkeying around the pier at lunchtime today after escaping from the home of Wild Ireland owner Killian McLaughlin.<\/p>\n<p>Joey is not a resident of Wild Ireland, but instead is one of four monkeys that Killian keeps as pets.<\/p>\n<p>Now 25 years old, Joey\u00a0featured in the Netflix series Return of the Wild: The Bearman of Buncrana, which tells the story of Killian\u2019s passion for animals.<\/p>\n<p>Killian explained that Joey\u2019s escape was the result of a lock not being closed properly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause a monkey\u2019s hands are so dextrous, he was able to open the lock,\u201d Mr McLaughlin said. \u201cHis stroll around Buncrana ended as soon as we were alerted that he was there.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-607796\" class=\"size-full wp-image-607796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image1-1-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"900\" height=\"1200\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-607796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Joey the monkey at the Buncrana Lough Swilly RNLI berth today. Photo: Jodie Harkin<\/p>\n<p>He described Joey as a tame animal, who has been the perfectly behaved pet for 25 years. \u201cHe was delighted to be back in his own territory,\u201d Killian added. \u201cHe ran straight back in to his family. The lock has been replaced already.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also issued thanks to the garda\u00ed and Lough Swilly RNLI for their cooperation in securing Joey.<\/p>\n<p>There is currently no legislation in Ireland that specifically governs the ownership of exotic pets at home.
