{"id":43241,"date":"2025-04-23T07:25:11","date_gmt":"2025-04-23T07:25:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/43241\/"},"modified":"2025-04-23T07:25:11","modified_gmt":"2025-04-23T07:25:11","slug":"new-regional-flag-doesnt-have-to-conflict-with-bid-for-irish-unity-says-academic-the-irish-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/43241\/","title":{"rendered":"New regional flag doesn\u2019t have to conflict with bid for Irish unity, says academic \u2013 The Irish News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Support for a new flag for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/northern-ireland-fashion-designer-appointed-to-top-role-at-dior-6GIMVZ2BYFHE7A6OSGFO5ITSC4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/northern-ireland-fashion-designer-appointed-to-top-role-at-dior-6GIMVZ2BYFHE7A6OSGFO5ITSC4\/\">Northern Ireland<\/a> \u2013 and the north of Ireland \u2013 shouldn\u2019t necessarily conflict with a desire for constitutional change, according to an academic who\u2019s advocating for a new unifying symbol for the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Professor David Mitchell, an associate professor in Trinity College Dublin\u2019s School of Religion, Theology and Peace Studies, says the example of Cornwall in the south-west of England offers an illustration of how a flag can be an expression of civic and regional identity, without being overtly political.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve been researching Northern Ireland and peace building here and elsewhere for 20 years, so I\u2019d always been aware of all the flags and symbols issues but I hadn\u2019t really thought much about an actual Northern Irish flag,\u201d he recalls. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWhen I went to Cornwall for the first time I discovered it has its own flag, which you see everywhere, sometimes in official settings, sometimes informally displayed on people\u2019s houses, sometimes with the English flag or with the union flag, and sometimes just on its own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"c-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/politics\/new-regional-flag-doesnt-have-to-conflict-with-bid-for-irish-unity-says-academic-TXCONEVF7RELBEFUSIEPE22V7A\/\" aria-hidden=\"true\" tabindex=\"-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"New regional flag doesn&#x2019;t have to conflict with bid for Irish unity, says academic  \" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/JKJB3OZHYVJ5TML5D2ZYETPMQM.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"450\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In a recently-published paper, he cites remarks last year by<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/ni-commonwealth-games-office-closed-amid-threats-over-flag-change-proposal-QNKXUGOPD5HADPXUCDOCVAUQFY\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/northern-ireland\/ni-commonwealth-games-office-closed-amid-threats-over-flag-change-proposal-QNKXUGOPD5HADPXUCDOCVAUQFY\/\"> Conal Heatley<\/a>, chief executive of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/king-and-sir-chris-hoy-kick-off-glasgow-commonwealth-games-countdown-FDI2FPTNPNKLRGPA4HCNC6I224\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/news\/uk\/king-and-sir-chris-hoy-kick-off-glasgow-commonwealth-games-countdown-FDI2FPTNPNKLRGPA4HCNC6I224\/\">Commonwealth Games<\/a> Northern Ireland.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Much to the chagrin of unionists, Mr Heatley suggested the Ulster Banner \u2013 or what is often incorrectly referred to as the Northern Ireland flag \u2013 should no longer be used to represent athletes from the north, beginning with next year\u2019s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He argued that the Ulster Banner never had any official status and that it had been used recently in incidents of racist intimidation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He argued that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/sport\/neil-loughran-commonwealth-games-flag-controversy-should-open-door-to-wider-conversation-ZYZRNORVMBCMZBU4PQJXTKDRIU\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishnews.com\/sport\/neil-loughran-commonwealth-games-flag-controversy-should-open-door-to-wider-conversation-ZYZRNORVMBCMZBU4PQJXTKDRIU\/\">Ulster Banner<\/a> never had any official status and that it had been used recently in incidents of racist intimidation.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"DM\" class=\"c-image\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/WW4PHF4IJNFOLM5FL3CM3Y42EE.jpg\"  width=\"800\" height=\"533\"\/>Professor David Mitchell of Trinity College Dublin. PICTURE: PAUL SHARP (Paul Sharp SHARPPIX\/Paul Sharp\/SHARPPIX) <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prof Mitchell says Mr Heatley\u2019s remarks \u201cshows that we have a lack of flags to choose from here and that one of the solutions might be to expand the repertoire of flags\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI understand that there have been other priorities over the last 27 years but it seems apparent that even though people are thinking of constitutional change, we\u2019re going to have the political arrangements that came out of the Good Friday Agreement for the foreseeable future, so why not have a symbol that could represent the agreement, and also the diversity of society?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">His paper \u2013 The Flag that Does Not Exist \u2013 Yet? Imagining a New Symbol in Northern Ireland \u2013 looks at other flags that have succeeded in securing widespread support in the region or country they represent, including Cornwall, Denmark and South Africa.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think there\u2019s a gap in the market for a flag \u2013 there\u2019s a flag-shaped hole in the north of Ireland,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The benefits, according to the academic, would be a degree of community cohesion and brand that the tourism sector could support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI think if people got off the plane or off the boat and saw this novel, new flag, it sort of communicates that there\u2019s something special here, it\u2019s not just another part of the UK or another part of Ireland, that there\u2019s something unique to be discovered,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He believes the Stormont executive should ultimately endorse the new flag, with the process of design most likely oversaw by the new Commission for Cultural Expression.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In terms of the flag\u2019s composition, Prof Mitchell has no preferences but notes that \u201cthere\u2019s a shared affection for place in the Northern Ireland, or the north of Ireland: the landscape, the climate and the coastline, the people, the humor, the food, the influence of Scotland and Britain and Ireland all together in this place\u201d. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cSo I think a flag could be a kind of expression of this regional identification which everybody shares.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He notes that while the red hand is \u201cprobably the only thing on which there is common affinity\u201d its previous use \u201cin different contexts\u201d means it\u2019s a likely non-starter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Prof Mitchell also stresses that creating a new flag \u201cdoesn\u2019t mean taking away anybody\u2019s flag or even limiting necessarily the use of flags\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" data-chromatic=\"ignore\" alt=\"The Irish tricolour.
