Liverpool have made a perfect start to the Champions League<\/a> with a 3-2 victory over Atletico Madrid. Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah<\/a> scored the goals inside six minutes, but Marcos Llorente – who famously scored twice at Anfield<\/a> for Atletico in 2020 – controversially prodded the visitors back into the game during first-half injury time.<\/p>\n

His deflected effort seemed to have earned a point nine minutes from time. However, Virgil van Dijk’s<\/a> header in the second minute of stoppage time sealed the win and Atletico boss Diego Simeone was subsequently sent off.<\/p>\n

Alexander Isak<\/a> finally made his debut for the Reds <\/a>after his \u00a3125million transfer deadline day<\/a> move from Newcastle United earlier this month. The Sweden international had played just 18 minutes since May, coming on for his national team in a 2-0 defeat to Kosovo during the international break.<\/p>\n

After stepping up his fitness work last week at the AXA Training Centre, he was named in Slot’s starting XI against Diego Simeone’s side.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, Alexis Mac Allister<\/a>, who caused Liverpool an injury scare after being substituted at half-time in the win over Burnley, started on the bench.<\/p>\n

The Argentina international then replaced Cody Gakpo<\/a> in the 58th minute.<\/p>\n

Ahead of the Merseyside derby on Saturday lunchtime, only Curtis Jones<\/strong> features in the injury list. The 24-year-old missed the trip to Burnley after sustaining a knock against Arsenal before the international break.<\/p>\n

No timeframe has been given for his return, but the injury is not believed to be serious and there is hope he could return for the game against Everton<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“Curtis will train with the team and hopefully able to be in the squad on Saturday but not for tomorrow [vs Atletico Madrid,” said Slot.<\/p>\n
