to win Wimbledon three years ago but is now the world number 991"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Things can change very quickly in tennis, which is something that this ATP player knows all about.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The year 2022 was a monumental year in the sport, starting off with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/throwbacks\/what-rafael-nadal-did-that-left-daniil-medvedev-in-awe-during-australian-open-final-in-2022\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rafael Nadal\u2019s heroic effort to win the Australian Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It also saw the emergence of another Spanish talent, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/features\/what-casper-ruud-said-about-carlos-alcaraz-after-he-won-his-first-ever-grand-slam-title-back-in-2022-at-the-us-open\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Carlos Alcaraz won his first major title at the US Open<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>While these two players remain as household names, another <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/atp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ATP<\/a> player who was seen as a dark horse for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/wimbledon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wimbledon<\/a> has suffered a dramatic fall since then.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" alt=\"Oscar Otte of Germany reacts during his second round match against Flavio Cobolli of Italy during day six of the BMW Open by American Express at MTTC IPHITOS.\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/GettyImages-1483514994-1024x683.jpg\" \/>Photo by Sebastian Widmann\/Getty Images for BMW Oscar Otte: The ATP player who was called a \u2018dark horse\u2019 for Wimbledon in 2022<\/p>\n<p>That player is German Oscar Otte, who really impressed during the 2022 grass court season.<\/p>\n<p>Otte began the grass court season that year as the world number 61, and had only reached one ATP semifinal before.<\/p>\n<p>That all changed very quickly, as Otte beat the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/denis-shapovalov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Denis Shapovalov<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/karen-khachanov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Karen Khachanov<\/a> to reach back-to-back grass court semifinals in Stuttgart and Halle.<\/p>\n<p>This enabled Otte to secure a late seeded spot at Wimbledon that year, and former British tennis player turned commentator Nick Lester named the German as a dark horse for The Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Lester told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wimbledon.com\/en_GB\/news\/articles\/2022-06-26\/finals_and_dark_horses_predictions_for_2022.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Wimbledon.com<\/a> in 2022, \u201cThe German has been in great form over the summer with back-to-back grass court semi-finals and his serve and volley game is not what many players are used to seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Otte somewhat lived up to that expectation, as he reached the third round of Wimbledon for the first time before losing to sixth seed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/carlos-alcaraz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcaraz<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this defeat, it was a hugely successful grass court season for Otte, but he was unable to continue his momentum from this run.<\/p>\n<p>What has happened to Oscar Otte since then?<\/p>\n<p>After reaching the third round of Wimbledon in 2022, Otte\u2019s life has been taken over by constant injury troubles.<\/p>\n<p>Otte underwent an arthroscopy on the inner meniscus of his left knee straight after Wimbledon that year, and he has only won one more Grand Slam match since then.<\/p>\n<p>That win came at Wimbledon the following year, but once again The Championships resulted in Otte requiring knee surgery.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for Otte there was another surgery to come, as he revealed at the end of last year that he had undergone a procedure on his right foot.<\/p>\n<p>Otte has not played an ATP Tour main draw match since the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thetennisgazette.com\/tag\/halle-open\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Halle Open<\/a> in 2024, and has only played lower-level ITF matches in 2025.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the former world number 36 is now ranked all the way down at world number 991, with Otte now looking far from the player who was called a Wimbledon dark horse in 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Things can change very quickly in tennis, which is something that this ATP player knows all about.
