Several anti-immigration protests across Northern Ireland on Thursday evening have passed off peacefully with only minor traffic disruption, police have said.<\/p>\n

Organisers had dubbed the simultaneous demonstrations \u2018Operation Shutdown\u2019 amid threats by some of those involved to block roads. <\/p>\n

Plans, locations and times for the reported protests had been circulated widely on social media. <\/p>\n

One image promoting a rally stated that \u201ca number of small areas will be participating across Northern Ireland but because of Republican Marxist aggression cannot reveal their details until the last minute [sic]\u201d. <\/p>\n

It also calls on those planning to participate to \u201ckeep it peaceful\u201d. <\/p>\n

The PSNI said a number of officers, including \u201cspecially trained evidence gatherers\u201d had attended a total of 15 protests had taken place across NI. <\/p>\n

Minor traffic disruption was reported at various locations in Belfast, Newtownabbey and Carrickfergus. <\/p>\n

Chief Superintendent Sue Steen said: \u201cPolice will review all available evidence to establish whether any further offences have been committed.<\/p>\n

“I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the public for their patience during this period.\u201d<\/p>\n

Two weeks ago, around 100 people<\/a> attended an anti-immigration demonstration in the grounds of Stormont.<\/p>\n

Protesters rounded on journalists covering the rally \u2013 organised by The Great Province Wide Protest NI \u2013 accusing them of publishing \u201cfake news\u201d and telling photographers and reporters they were \u201cnot welcome\u201d.<\/p>\n

Both the Union flag and the Irish tricolour were brandished at the rally.<\/p>\n
