{"id":435387,"date":"2025-09-19T06:03:14","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T06:03:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/435387\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T06:03:14","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T06:03:14","slug":"irish-consumers-ditch-cash-and-cards-in-favour-of-digital-wallet-payments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/435387\/","title":{"rendered":"Irish consumers ditch cash and cards in favour of digital wallet payments"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Cash use is falling fast, according to a new report from the Banking and Payments Federation Ireland (BPFI).<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Almost 60pc of contactless payments in shops, restaurants and other retail outlets were made using mobile wallets rather than cards in first half of this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">This is a rise of almost 20pc on the same period last year, according to the \u2018BPFI Payments Monitor\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Despite the enthusiasm for using digital payments, research conducted by the representative group for banks found that one in four consumers do not plan to use the digital euro planned by the European Central Bank (ECB).<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The banks said this highlighted the need for a raising of consumer awareness of the potential benefits of the digital euro.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">A digital euro is a digital form of central bank money backed by the ECB that would act as an electronic equivalent to cash and is free for basic use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">BPFI said there was uncertainty as to how a digital euro would work.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"More consumers are using smartphones to make purchases.
