It could allow the team to test bench strength while giving key batters like Sanju Samson, Tilak Verma, and even Hardik Pandya some valuable time at the crease, something they have missed due to India’s commanding wins earlier in the tournament. Gavaskar also pointed out that resting Bumrah would help keep the strike bowler fresh for the more challenging Super 4 matches.

“I would like to think that India would consider batting first and keep the same opening pair. Maybe number three, Suryakumar Yadav, the skipper, could drop himself down the order, giving Tilak Verma a chance for some time at the crease and allowing Sanju Samson a bit of a hit as well,” Gavaskar said.

“This would give the batters some practice not just for the game against Pakistan, but also for the upcoming Super 4 matches against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It’s more about preparing the batters than the bowlers,” he added.

“I believe Jasprit Bumrah should be rested, perhaps even for the Pakistan game, so he’s available for the bigger match on Sunday, the 28th, which is against Sri Lanka. That’s what India should be looking at. Of course, there will still need to be one bench player included, but Bumrah should be left out for tomorrow’s game to give him res,” Gavaskar added.

India have already secured the top spot in their group with wins over UAE and Pakistan, making the Oman fixture an ideal chance to rotate players. Bumrah, who has been in excellent form, claimed two for 28 against Pakistan and now sits as India’s fourth-highest wicket-taker in T20Is, with 92 wickets in 72 matches at an average of 17.67 and an economy of 6.29.

Arshdeep Singh and Harshit Rana are expected to fill Bumrah’s spot in the playing XI. For Arshdeep, the game carries additional significance, as he needs just one more wicket to become the eighth Indian bowler to reach 100 T20I wickets. Their inclusion would not only bolster India’s bowling attack but also provide crucial match practice for the upcoming Super 4 stage.

The Oman match will also allow India’s batters to get more time in the middle. Dominant victories against UAE and Pakistan meant that top and middle-order players had limited opportunities to bat. Gavaskar stressed the importance of using the game to prepare for tougher contests against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

Spin options have also been in form, with Kuldeep Yadav’s three for 18 against Pakistan moving him past Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin into sixth place on India’s T20I wicket-takers list. His contribution gives India depth as they head into a challenging phase of the tournament.

– Ends

Published By:

Debodinna Chakraborty

Published On:

Sep 19, 2025

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has called on India to plan ahead for their Asia Cup Super 4…

[4101
147838,147835,147837,147840,87088,147828,147829,147832,147831,147830,147834,147833,147839,1406,147836,147827,79,16,15
0":"post-435829","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-cricket","8":"tag-bumrah-asia-cup-plan","9":"tag-bumrah-bowling-figures-t20i","10":"tag-bumrah-fitness-update","11":"tag-bumrah-future-matches-india","12":"tag-bumrah-injury-management","13":"tag-bumrah-rested-vs-oman","14":"tag-bumrah-rested-vs-pakistan","15":"tag-bumrah-rotation-strategy","16":"tag-bumrah-strike-bowler-asia-cup","17":"tag-bumrah-t20i-wickets","18":"tag-bumrah-vs-pakistan-2025","19":"tag-bumrah-vs-uae-performance","20":"tag-bumrah-workload-management","21":"tag-cricket","22":"tag-india-pace-attack-bumrah","23":"tag-jasprit-bumrah-asia-cup-2025","24":"tag-sports","25":"tag-uk","26":"tag-united-kingdom
["GET
