PARIS (AP) \u2014 A moment of truth: that\u2019s how French President Emmanuel Macron sees the recognition of a Palestinian state<\/a> by France and other Western nations, with the hope to make it a landmark step in his push for peace in the Middle East as the devastating war in Gaza<\/a> continues.<\/p>\n

Weakened and unpopular at home, Macron is more than ever taking center stage in international talks. He is to formally declare France\u2019s recognition of a Palestinian state on Monday in New York at a United Nations conference co-chaired with Saudi Arabia, as the U.N. General Assembly starts.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have to recognize the legitimate right of Palestinian people to have a state,\u201d Macron said in an interview broadcast Thursday on Israeli television Channel 12. \u201cIf you don\u2019t give a political perspective, in fact you just put them in the hands of those who are just proposing a security approach, an aggressive approach.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move comes as Israel launched this week its ground offensive in Gaza City<\/a> which Macron denounced as \u201cabsolutely unacceptable\u201d and \u201ca huge mistake.\u201d <\/p>\n

It has angered Israel and the United States,<\/a> which state that it emboldens extremists and rewards Hamas, the group that led the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks.<\/p>\n

Other countries expected to follow<\/p>\n

Macron argues the move is the only way to bring peace and stability to the region as it puts back on the table a two-state solution<\/a>, in which a Palestinian state would be created alongside Israel in most or all of the West Bank, Gaza Strip and east Jerusalem \u2014 territories Israel seized in the 1967 Mideast war. <\/p>\n

More than 145 countries already recognize a Palestinian state, including more than a dozen in Europe. <\/p>\n

The U.K., Canada, Malta, Belgium and Luxembourg, among others, are expected to follow Macron\u2019s lead in recognizing Palestinian statehood in the coming days. <\/p>\n

The move aims to prompt \u201ctangible, irreversible progress within a time frame that allows for a return to the two-state solution,\u201d according to a top French diplomat. The official spoke anonymously in line with the French presidency\u2019s customary practices.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur analysis shared by regional players, starting with Saudi Arabia, is that this (peace) process can only resume with the creation of a Palestinian state,\u201d the official said. <\/p>\n

Macron announced his decision at the end of July, arguing there\u2019s no time to wait. \u201cThe urgent thing today is that the war in Gaza stops and the civilian population is saved,\u201d he wrote on social platform X.<\/p>\n

France insists the creation of a Palestinian state implies the dismantlement of Hamas. In July, Arab League nations agreed that \u201cHamas must end its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority\u201d as part of the New York Declaration<\/a> at the U.N.<\/p>\n

Macron\u2019s push has contributed to a sharp souring of his relationship with Israel\u2019s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Trump\u2019s ambassador to France, Charles Kushner, who accused him of fueling violence. <\/p>\n

Macron, with U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer, is also spearheading a diplomatic drive to increase support for Ukraine. They are joining President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for talks with U.S. President Donald Trump last month.<\/p>\n

The French leader recently announced that 26 of Ukraine\u2019s allies have pledged to deploy troops<\/a> as a \u201creassurance force\u201d for the war-torn country once fighting ends in the conflict with Russia.<\/p>\n

Strong reactions in France<\/p>\n

The move to recognize a Palestinian state has prompted waves of reaction in France, which is home to Europe\u2019s largest Jewish and Muslim populations.<\/p>\n

The Representative Council of Jewish Institutions in France (CRIF) called it \u201ca moral failing, a diplomatic error, and a political danger,\u201d fearing it would further fuel antisemitism amid a sharp rise in reported incidents since the Oct. 7 attacks and ensuing war in Gaza.<\/p>\n

Weekly pro-Palestinian protests are being staged in Paris and other French cities.<\/p>\n

Far-right leader Marine Le Pen, whose National Rally party is leading the polls, accused Macron of \u201cdoing it purely for electoral reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

France\u2019s left-wing opposition welcomed Macron\u2019s move. The head of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, suggested mayors should raise the Palestinian flag over town halls on Monday.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau asked prefects, who represent the government locally, to oppose such a gesture, invoking the principle of neutrality of public services.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are enough divisive issues in the country without importing the conflict in the Middle East,\u201d Retailleau wrote on X. <\/p>\n

Gloomy prospects at home<\/p>\n

With less than two years left in office, Macron also has his legacy in mind. <\/p>\n

International politics has become his main focus since prospects at home turned gloomy after he dissolved the National Assembly last year, leading to a hung parliament.<\/p>\n

The French leader\u2019s name has been the focus of angry slogans in anti-government protests,<\/a> with many pointing to him as responsible for France\u2019s political instability, rising prices and spiraling deficit.<\/p>\n

Faced with unprecedented political turmoil, Macron has made it clear he intends to stay in office until the end of his term in 2027, but has sought to distance himself from the daily bumps of domestic politics. <\/p>\n

Instead, he has let the prime minister be at the forefront.
