Multi-billionaire businessman James Dyson<\/a> has reiterated his support for Brexit<\/a>, arguing that it is better to be \u201cindependent\u201d \u2013\u00a0even if leaving the EU<\/a> has made people poorer.<\/p>\n

Britain<\/a>\u2019s fourth-wealthiest man was one of the most prominent UK business leaders to back Boris Johnson\u2019s Leave campaign in 2016.<\/p>\n

But the 78-year-old, who is worth an estimated \u00a320bn, came under criticism after moving his company Dyson\u2019s global headquarters <\/a>to Singapore<\/a> in 2019.<\/p>\n

Asked during a new interview with The Times if he believed Brexit was going well, he referred to the creation of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine saying: \u201cWell, you got a Covid vaccine before you would have otherwise. That\u2019s the advantage of being independent.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI can\u2019t judge it. For me, it\u2019s not whether it\u2019s going well or not. It\u2019s important to be independent and make your own decisions.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you\u2019re poorer, worse off, it\u2019s better to be making your own decisions than having supranational bodies making them for you. It\u2019s that independence. I don\u2019t want someone else telling me what to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his memoir, he argued that the EU\u2019s free movement of people didn\u2019t provide companies such as his with the right engineers, and that regulations, such as energy-label performance data, had hindered progress.<\/p>\n

Asked if he regretted his stance and his involvement in politics, he said: \u201cI regret getting involved, but I don\u2019t regret my views.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pioneer of the bagless vacuum cleaner, Sir James\u2019 company also produces air purifiers, hairdryers and other household appliances.<\/p>\n

Responding to criticism about Dyson\u2019s relocation to Asia, he added: \u201cWell, I haven\u2019t left the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, Singapore is one of the most expensive countries in the world. I moved the headquarters there for totally different reasons.\u201d<\/p>\n

Those reasons included suppliers struggling to meet the demand of his growing company, and a skills shortage in the UK.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am one of Britain\u2019s largest taxpayers. Establishing the HQ of Dyson in Singapore did not change where and how the revenue and profits are taxed. We still pay more tax in Britain than in any other country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Of Dyson\u2019s 10,000 employees worldwide, 2,000 are in the UK, with major offices in Wiltshire, Bristol and London.<\/p>\n

In July 2024, the company announced a global shake-up, which saw a third of its UK workforce made redundant. <\/a><\/p>\n
