{"id":436218,"date":"2025-09-19T14:01:19","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T14:01:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/436218\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T14:01:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T14:01:19","slug":"transformation-of-edinburghs-lothian-road-canal-terminus-from-boats-to-cinema-popcorn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/436218\/","title":{"rendered":"Transformation of Edinburgh&#8217;s Lothian Road canal terminus from boats to cinema popcorn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Union Canal was a popular route for travellers between Edinburgh and Glasgow.<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_s1porthopetounwarehouse.jpg\" alt=\"Port Hopetoun Warehouse\" loading=\"eager\"  \/>Port Hopetoun Warehouse(Image:  Historic Environment Scotland)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Long before the convenience of a swift drive across the M8, the Union Canal served as a seamless route for <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/travel\/\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"travellers Link opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">travellers <\/a>journeying between Edinburgh and Glasgow, with its path leading right up to Lothian Road.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Upon reaching Edinburgh, voyagers <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/gallery\/hidden-gem-perth-village-pub-35915577\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"would disembark at the city centre&#039;s eastern terminus of the canalLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">would disembark at the city centre&#8217;s eastern terminus of the canal<\/a>. Known as Port Hopetoun, this basin was a city fixture for nearly a century before it was ultimately deserted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Passenger boats, known as Swifts, took a total of seven hours to reach Falkirk, and an additional six hours to arrive in Glasgow. In 1836, the canal&#8217;s heyday, 200,000 people were commuting on this intercity waterway.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Constructed between 1818 and 1822, the basin also facilitated the import of coal, grain and building materials, as well as the export of waste. Passengers alighted from the boat a mere 500 feet from where the Usher Hall now stands, onto a terminal spanning 900 square metres.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">A bus service transported passengers from the Lothian Road basin to<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/iconic-hotel-views-edinburgh-castle-34877046\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" Princes StreetLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> Princes Street<\/a>, with the basin taking its name from the Earl of Hopetoun.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_s1drainedbasin.jpg\" alt=\"Infilling at the city centre terminus (Image: Historic Environment Scotland)\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Infilling at the city centre terminus (Image: Historic Environment Scotland)(Image: Historic Environment Scotland)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">The Earl&#8217;s collieries provided Edinburgh with a significant portion of its coal, which passed through the basin, reports <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.edinburghlive.co.uk\/news\/history\/edinburghs-forgotten-canal-terminus-saw-32509994\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Edinburgh Live<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">For the sum of 6s 6d, passengers were allocated a cabin onboard for the journey &#8211; equivalent to about two days&#8217; wage at the time. For those on a tighter budget, deck seating was available for 4s 6d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Travellers would journey beneath bridges during their <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/lifestyle\/travel\/i-visited-irish-town-braveheart-35698702\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"tripsLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">trips<\/a>, each one numbered and some decorated in black, blue, red or gold hues. The colours signified the various roles the canal played &#8211; black representing coal, blue symbolising water, red marking the lives lost during construction, and gold celebrating the wealth generated since it was built.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">One stretch of the waterway that offers a window into history is the Lemmington Lift Bridge, constructed in 1906. By 1960, it had deteriorated badly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">As part of the Millennium Link Project and canal restoration in 2000, work to repair the bridge commenced &#8211; and it reopened for the first time in May 2002.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">Currently, the canal terminates at Lochrin Basin in Fountainbridge. However, this little-known hamlet was <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dailyrecord.co.uk\/scotland-now\/ancient-village-near-edinburgh-possibly-35923868\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"once said to be owned by the Knights TemplarLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">once said to be owned by the Knights Templar<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"dailyrecord\">It might sound like a plot straight out of a Dan Brown novel, but in the 12th century, this small Midlothian village was the main preceptory of the Knights Templar.
