{"id":437008,"date":"2025-09-19T21:31:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-19T21:31:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/437008\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T21:31:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T21:31:10","slug":"kneecap-banned-from-canada-for-glorifying-terrorist-organisations-kneecap","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/437008\/","title":{"rendered":"Kneecap banned from Canada for \u2018glorifying terrorist organisations\u2019 | Kneecap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Canadian government has banned rap trio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/kneecap\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kneecap<\/a> from entering the country over allegedly \u201cglorifying terrorist organisations\u201d \u2013 with the band announcing they will take legal action against the \u201cwholly untrue and deeply malicious\u201d accusations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The Belfast group, made up of Naoise \u00d3 Caireall\u00e1in, Liam \u00d3g \u00d3 hAnnaidh and JJ \u00d3 Dochartaigh, are known for their provocative lyrics and merchandise, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/jun\/27\/kneecap-on-palestine-protest-and-their-satirical-intent\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">as well as their pro-Palestine stance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They have repeatedly hit headlines this year, including in April when footage emerged that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/music\/2025\/may\/01\/pulp-and-pogues-among-uk-artists-defending-kneecap-against-political-repression\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">appeared to show a band member saying \u201cUp Hamas, up Hezbollah\u201d at a gig<\/a>; in June <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/media\/2025\/jun\/30\/bbc-should-have-pulled-live-stream-bob-vylan-glastonbury-anti-idf-chants\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">when their Glastonbury festival set was investigated by police<\/a> who later said they would be taking \u201cno further action\u201d; and when \u00d3 hAnnaidh has appeared in court charged with the alleged display of a Hezbollah flag at a show.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">On Friday, Canada\u2019s parliamentary secretary for combatting crime announced in a video on social media that Kneecap have been deemed ineligible to enter the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">Vince Gasparro said: \u201cRecently, the rap group Kneecap has engaged in actions and have made statements that are contrary to Canadian values and laws that have caused deep alarm to our government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThe group have amplified political violence and publicly displayed support for terrorist organisations such as Hezbollah and Hamas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThese are not expressions of art or legitimate political critique, they are dangerous endorsements of violence and hate. Notably, one member of the band is currently facing terrorism-related charges in the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cCriticism of foreign governments is protected under Canada\u2019s Charter of Rights and Freedoms, however advocating for political violence, glorifying terrorist organisations and displaying hate symbols that directly target the Jewish community are not protected forms of expression and will not be tolerated by our government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cThat is why, as parliamentary secretary for combating crime, I am announcing that, effective immediately, the members of Kneecap have been deemed ineligible to enter Canada.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">The trio responded with a statement on X, titled A Message to Vince Gasparro, in which they announced legal action and said they will beat the politician in court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They said: \u201cYour comments about us are wholly untrue and deeply malicious. We will not accept it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cNo member of Kneecap has been convicted of ANY crime in ANY country EVER.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhilst you outrageously try to claim we are antisemitic \u2018the Times\u2019 newspaper in England today wrote of our headline show in London last night as \u2018emphatically anti-sectarian\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have today instructed our lawyers to initiate legal action against you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe will be relentless in defending ourselves against baseless accusations to silence our opposition to a genocide being committed by Israel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWhen we beat you in court, which we will, we will donate every cent to assist some of the thousands of child amputees in Gaza.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">They also posted a message to their Canadian fans, saying that Canada\u2019s immigration\/eTA (electronic travel authorisation) authorities requested information from them, which they provided on Thursday, adding: \u201cIt is our view that when they realised there was no legal basis on which to stop us that they today, via Vince Gasparro, sought to maliciously misrepresent Kneecap.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe have played in Canada many times with zero issues and a message of solidarity and love.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">\u201cWe are sorry we cannot be with you next month but we will not be silenced and will always oppose genocide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-130mj7b\">It comes after a performance at London\u2019s Wembley Arena on Thursday in which the trio addressed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/sep\/18\/trump-tells-britain-to-call-out-the-military-to-control-its-borders\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Donald Trump\u2019s state visit to the UK<\/a>, including with a message displayed on the wall before the start of the show that read: \u201cStarmer welcomed Isaac Herzog to this city like a king last week.
