procurement round, which would set a tight deadline for agreeing on rules around its participation with the EU, Champagne said: \u201cI would think so \u2026 I think we want to be in the first wave, there\u2019s no doubt.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe defense procurement imperative is front and center,\u201d he said, highlighting Canada\u2019s critical minerals and icebreakers as products it could contribute to the procurement scheme.<\/p>\n<p>Trade ties<\/p>\n<p>Asked whether Canada is disappointed in the U.K. and the EU for capitulating to the U.S. by signing suboptimal trade deals to avoid punishing tariffs, Champagne said \u201ceveryone has to look at their own strategic interest.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I look at other countries, each of us started from a different base,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you look at the different deals that have been struck \u2026 I think each of us found a way forward to restore a bit of certainty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although there \u201cwill still be volatility and uncertainty,\u201d global trade is in \u201ca more stable place now,\u201d Champagne said.<\/p>\n<p>The EU is pushing for closer ties to the Pacific-centric trade group <a href=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/trade-commerce\/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux\/agr-acc\/cptpp-ptpgp\/index.aspx?lang=eng\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.international.gc.ca\/trade-commerce\/trade-agreements-accords-commerciaux\/agr-acc\/cptpp-ptpgp\/index.aspx?lang=eng\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the CPTPP<\/a>, which includes like-minded countries such as Canada, Japan, Australia and Mexico and is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/goodbye-trump-hello-asia-is-the-eus-new-trade-strategy-will-it-work\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/goodbye-trump-hello-asia-is-the-eus-new-trade-strategy-will-it-work\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">emerging as an alternative<\/a> for rules-based trade away from the paralyzed World Trade Organization. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Champagne said he wants to \u201cstrengthen and expand\u201d the CPTPP trading bloc, which he described as \u201ca nice alternative\u201d and \u201cfoundational for having a rule-based trading system in that part of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI see a lot of benefit, particularly as it seems more likely than ever that there won\u2019t be many more \u2026 multilateral trading agreements of the same scope and scale,\u201d Champagne said.
