On the changing landscape of Bold Street, Liverpool city centre&#8217;s most popular thoroughfare, a few shining gems hark back to the heyday of high street shopping.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The street&#8217;s survivors are well known to anyone who calls Liverpool home. <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/shop-frozen-time-connection-customers-29399773\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Matta&#8217;s international food shop,<\/a> whose eye-catching blue exterior has become something of a landmark, celebrated 40 years on Bold Street last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Radical community bookshop <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/radical-city-bookshop-thats-like-29400657\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">News From Nowhere <\/a>moved from Whitechapel to Bold Street in 1996, and remains on the street 29 years later, offering a broad spectrum of political books on every topic from the environment to feminism to LGBT rights.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Also opening in 1996 was Maggie May&#8217;s caf\u00e9, proclaimed to serve the<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/bold-street-venue-serving-best-21186250\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> &#8220;best Scouse in the city&#8221;.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\"><a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/city-centre-shop-niche-market-32212246\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Forbidden Planet opened on Bold Street<\/a> in 1994 with a special guest appearance from Batman actor Adam West, and has secured a &#8220;niche market&#8221; for all things <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/film-news\/\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">geeky<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">But opportunities for high street shopping on Bold Street have diminished in recent years, as a huge array of restaurants, pubs and coffee shops have made homes there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">One new business bucking the trend is the Fripp Store, an &#8220;affordable, inclusive and chic&#8221; second-hand clothes shop, which opened on Thursday, September 18, in what used to be the House of Colour beauty salon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">It will be the latest addition to the ever-busy Bold Street, which recently saw the addition of the Tokyo-inspired underground <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/new-underground-bar-people-want-31883732\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;listening bar&#8221; Suono<\/a> and <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/new-bold-street-venue-confirms-31873002\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Joe &amp; The Juice<\/a>. House of Caesar, a Middle Eastern and Mediterranean restaurant, is <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/citys-300000-restaurant-opening-date-32478675\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">due to open at the end of the month.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_1000015029.jpg\" alt=\"The new Fripp Store on Bold Street\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The new Fripp Store on Bold Street(Image: Liverpool Echo)<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Meanwhile, further planning applications have been submitted for currently-unused units. British high street giant Pret A Manger has <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/new-shop-confirmed-city-centre-32402370\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">been granted permission <\/a>to open a new store in what was formerly the SK:N clinic, and proposals have been made to transform the former Ellis Brigham mountain clothing shop into the <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/brazilian-steakhouse-plans-former-city-32263407\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Coco Brazil Rodizio Bar &amp; Grill.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The shake-up follows the closures of a number of well-loved Bold Street institutions, some of which had called Bold Street home for many years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Ellis Brigham was<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/citys-fab-four-store-shuts-31004680\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> one of the original &#8220;Fab Four&#8221; stores<\/a> operating on Bold Street, opening to a different world in 1964.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/0_1000013922.jpg\" alt=\"Ellis Brigham operated on Bold Street for 60 years\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>Ellis Brigham operated on Bold Street for 60 years<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Announcing its permanent closure in February this year, a spokesman for the mountain sports retailer said: \u201cThe area has changed. We are surrounded by bars and cafes. There are no more shops near us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The closure came just one month after The <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/liverpool-lost-great-today-bold-30775019\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian Club Fish<\/a>, a seafood restaurant at the top of the street, closed with \u201cimmediate effect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Similarly, long-standing<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/smiffys-message-liverpool-bold-street-30330160\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> fancy dress giant Smiffys<\/a> also closed just a few doors down at the end of last year. The shop was located on <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/bold-street\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\"Bold StreetLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Bold Street<\/a> for more than two decades before it shut its doors in November 2024. It was<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/salsa-unveils-new-exterior-former-31185613\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> replaced by family-run tapas bar So Salsa.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">In a heartfelt tribute before the store shut its doors, a Smiffys spokesperson said: &#8220;We\u2019re sad to announce the closure of the Smiffys Bold Street store. Thank you to the wonderful people of Liverpool for hosting us for over 20 years, we are very sad to leave and are acutely aware of the profound impact it will have on each member of our valued team, but it is a reality of a trading environment in a prime high street location.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">The old <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/news\/liverpool-news\/its-wrench-leave-says-bold-24854941\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Rennies Art Gallery closed in 2022<\/a>, marking the end of a three-decade era. The picturesque building, beside the Route One skate shop, was transformed into an <a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/food-drink-news\/gallery\/first-look-inside-historic-building-30519136\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\">Italian pizza restaurant, Franco Manca, in November last year.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/1_WhatsApp-Image-2024-11-25-at-154341jpeg.jpg\" alt=\"The new Franco Manca on Bold Street\" loading=\"lazy\"  \/>The new Franco Manca on Bold Street<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Also opening last year was Fattoush, a Lebanese restaurant expanding from its sister site at Hatton Garden in Vauxhall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">More recently,<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/whats-on\/whats-on-news\/beating-heart-bold-street-announces-32408065\" target=\"_self\" aria-label=\"\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> the &#8220;beating heart&#8221; of Bold Street, Leaf, <\/a>announced its plans for closure on September 21 this month. The city centre venue, run by siblings Natalie and Graham Haywood, first opened in 2010, and later opened a second branch on Smithdown Road and a site in<a class=\"TextLink_text-link__dBSS0 TextLink_enabled__dJF3l\" href=\"https:\/\/www.liverpoolecho.co.uk\/all-about\/west-kirby\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" West KirbyLink opens in a new tab.\" tabindex=\"0\" rel=\"noopener\"> West Kirby<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">Taking to Instagram to announce the sad news, a spokesman wrote: \u201cThe people. The community. The beautiful building we&#8217;ve proudly called home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cAfter fifteen incredible years, it&#8217;s time to draw this chapter to a close. LEAF on Bold Street has been more than just a venue it&#8217;s been a beating heart. A place where laughter has echoed, tears have been shared, art has been made, and ideas have bloomed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">\u201cBeing part of the memories, the music, the feelings, and the unforgettable moments here has been a true honour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_paragraph-text__PVKlh \" data-tmdatatrack=\"content-unit\" data-tmdatatrack-type=\"paragraph\" publication=\"liverpoolecho\">&#8220;This place has meant the world to us.
