If you\u2019ve ever been to the Scottish Highlands<\/a>, you\u2019ll know that public transport<\/a> is rather limited in the most rural of areas.<\/p>\n But those living by the coast<\/a> might one day be able to travel<\/a> around the region via a \u2018flying boat\u2019.<\/p>\n That\u2019s because Highlands and Islands Transport Partnership (Hitrans) is teaming up with US-based company, Regent, who have developed an electric vessel known as a Seaglider.<\/p>\n The Seaglider is the first-ever vehicle to successfully utilise three modes of maritime operation \u2013 floating, foiling and flying \u2013 which means it can travel on the surface of the water, skim the surface on a hydrofoil and even fly at a low level.<\/p>\n \t\t The vessel can hold up to 12 passengers at one time, as well as two crew members and is able to reach speeds of 180mph.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tSign up to The Getaway newsletter\t\t\t<\/p>\n Fuel your wanderlust with our curated newsletter of travel deals, guides and inspiration.\u00a0Sign up here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Hitrans and Regent are currently in the early stages of a partnership, exploring whether the Seaglider would be a viable transport option for North Scotland<\/a>.<\/p>\n The first stage of the collaboration will focus on data sharing and how they could improve the transport network in Scotland and help reduce CO2 emissions.<\/a><\/p>\n Nothing is set in stone, but if research goes well they could trial the vessels in the future.<\/p>\n Adam Triolo, the vice president of commercial business development at Regent, said that the work with Hitrans was an \u2018exciting opportunity to showcase the potential human and environmental benefits\u2019 of the Seaglider vessels.<\/p>\n \u2018Regent\u2019s Seaglider technology is an all-electric sustainable<\/a> solution that could transform the way people transit this area of natural beauty,\u2019 he continued.<\/p>\n David Holden, the regional sustainable aviation manager at Hitrans added: \u2018Regent are bringing much needed innovation to coastal transportation which has the potential to transform how people travel across the Highlands and Islands in the future.<\/p>\n \u2018We look forward to continuing to collaborate and help to realise the vision of Seaglider travel for the people of Scotland.\u2019<\/p>\n In other sea news a cruise ship has gone viral for a \u2018depressing\u2019 feature \u2013 a \u2018virtual balcony\u2019.<\/a><\/p>\n Passengers on the Royal Caribbean\u2019s Anthem of the Seas\u00a0who can\u2019t afford a balcony room are able to book a room with a high-definition screen that \u2018brings a live ocean view right to you\u2019 for \u00a3858.<\/p>\n The \u2018window\u2019 has curtains and a fake railing, with a live feed that plays whenever you wish to see it.<\/p>\n First introduced in 2014, the virtual balcony was considered ground-breaking at the time.
