Many users compared the phenomenon to a “shooting star explosion,” while others described it as one of the brightest meteors they had ever seen.

Astronomy experts said the event was most likely a bolide, a type of meteor that bursts into fragments after entering the Earth’s atmosphere due to intense friction and heat. While meteors are not uncommon, a bright event visible to such a large population is considered rare.

No damage was expected since most meteors disintegrate before reaching the ground.

The American Meteor Society had earlier noted that September is an active period for smaller meteor showers, though isolated fireball-like meteors can be seen outside of predicted showers. The brightness and fragmentation seen in Delhi indicate a sizeable rock from space burning up spectacularly.

Residents across Delhi NCR reported the flash was visible for only a few seconds but bright enough to outshine the city lights. Some also claimed to have heard a faint rumbling sound afterwards, though no official confirmation was issued.

Authorities have not reported any impacts, but skywatchers described the sight as a once-in-a-lifetime space spectacle.

There are also speculations that it may have been a small satellite that disintegrated. However, there has been no word around it from the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) or any other space agency. Space debris remains a big concern globally.

– Ends

Published By:

Sibu Kumar Tripathi

Published On:

Sep 20, 2025

New Delhi witnessed a spectacular celestial event on Friday night when a bright fireball lit up the skies,…

[3844
148647,148645,148649,44750,148646,148644,70,72,413,16,15,148648
0":"post-438980","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-space","8":"tag-bollide","9":"tag-delhi-meteor-crash","10":"tag-gurugram-meteor-crash","11":"tag-india-today-science","12":"tag-meteor-crash-delhi","13":"tag-meteor-crash-video","14":"tag-science","15":"tag-science-news","16":"tag-space","17":"tag-uk","18":"tag-united-kingdom","19":"tag-what-is-bollide
["GET
