With Liverpool coming through an intense run of wins over Burnley<\/a>, Atletico Madrid and Everton<\/a> in seven days, Arne Slot<\/a> will rest at least five players against Southampton<\/a>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Liverpool navigated a tricky run over fixtures over the past week against three opponents built to frustrate them whenever possible.<\/p>\n

Slot made three changes between beating Burnley<\/a> 1-0 and the 3-2 win over Atletico and then four for the 2-1 Merseyside derby victory, with seven players starting all three games.<\/p>\n

Next up is the visit of Southampton<\/a> in the third round of the Carabao Cup<\/a>, and speaking in his post-match press conference, Slot said Virgil van Dijk<\/a>, Ibrahima Konate<\/a>, Ryan Gravenberch<\/a>, Dominik Szoboszlai<\/a> and Mohamed Salah<\/a> will not be involved in that tie.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThe ones that played three times 90 [minutes] are Virgil, Ibou, Mo, Ryan and Dom \u2013 the ones that are used to this intensity and this level,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n

The chances are that Alisson<\/a> and Cody Gakpo<\/a> \u2013 the other two players from that group of seven ever-presents \u2013 will not start in the cup either.<\/p>\n

Liverpool were in a way fortunate with the Carabao Cup<\/a> draw as they will face Championship opposition, but Slot is likely to name a strong side regardless.<\/p>\n

That comes with the likes of Jeremie Frimpong<\/a>, Joe Gomez<\/a>, Andy Robertson<\/a>, Curtis Jones<\/a>, Federico Chiesa<\/a> and Rio Ngumoha<\/a> needing minutes while Giorgi Mamardashvili<\/a> and Giovanni Leoni<\/a> could both feature for the first time.<\/p>\n

It should also be an opportunity for Alexander Isak<\/a> to start again, while Florian Wirtz<\/a> may be considered having been rested on Saturday.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is also the reason why teams like us, all the ones that are playing in Europe, need a squad like this. Because you need to play so many games,\u201d Slot continued.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not an excuse, we have to accept it as it is.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut we have had some issues, with Alexander Isak<\/a> not training for four months, Mac Allister missing out a lot.<\/p>\n

Slot added that he had been planning to withdraw Gravenberch on the hour mark \u2013 likely as part of a triple substitution along with Gakpo and Mac Allister \u2013 only for Everton<\/a>\u2018s goal to change his approach.<\/p>\n
