{"id":439383,"date":"2025-09-20T21:03:10","date_gmt":"2025-09-20T21:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/439383\/"},"modified":"2025-09-20T21:03:10","modified_gmt":"2025-09-20T21:03:10","slug":"champagne-says-canada-could-be-key-exporter-of-critical-minerals-energy-to-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/uk\/439383\/","title":{"rendered":"Champagne says Canada could be key exporter of critical minerals, energy to Europe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a style=\"display:block\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/resizer\/v2\/LKFWOADIDNHLXB2TEYYRZBONBA.JPG?auth=d7d5b81e5e2d1f9661317310206cbb7e5f508a93bb524ebc03dad3811d4687fc&amp;width=600&amp;height=400&amp;quality=80&amp;smart=true\" aria-haspopup=\"true\" data-photo-viewer-index=\"0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open this photo in gallery:<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"figcap-text\">The Finance minister said defence and security were a major theme at this week\u2019s meeting, and pointed to key assets that Canada brings to the table.\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Sept. 17, 2025.Sean Kilpatrick\/The Canadian Press<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Canada\u2019s finance minister says the country could be a \u201csupplier of choice\u201d for European markets looking to bolster energy security and defence capabilities. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Following a meeting in Denmark with European Union finance ministers, Fran\u00e7ois-Philippe Champagne said Saturday that Canadian critical mineral and energy exports could help European economies become more resilient while diversifying Canada\u2019s trade relationships. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe are redesigning the world economic order at a speed and at a scale that I would say has not been seen in a generation,\u201d he told reporters on a call from Copenhagen. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cThey have taken notice that we\u2019re putting our house in order so that we can be more competitive, that we can be a trusted supplier of natural resources, that we are willing to partner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text mv-16 l-inset text-pb-8\" data-sophi-feature=\"interstitial\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-canada-us-deal-usmca-review-tariff-relief-dominic-leblanc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada focused on tariff relief as it begins consultations on USMCA review, LeBlanc says<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Champagne said the need to strengthen defence and security ties was a major theme at this week\u2019s meeting, and pointed to critical minerals, energy resources and shipbuilding expertise as key assets that Canada brings to the table. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The European outreach comes ahead of what are expected to be challenging negotiations to review the Canada-U.S.-Mexico Agreement next year. On Thursday, Canada and Mexico <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-carney-mexico-visit-trade-ties\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.theglobeandmail.com\/politics\/article-carney-mexico-visit-trade-ties\/\">signed a pact to deepen economic and security ties<\/a> between the two countries, which Prime Minister Mark Carney said would \u201ccomplement\u201d the trilateral trade deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cObviously, the United States is a key trading partner,\u201d Champagne said Saturday. \u201cBut at the same time, I think that it would be prudent for Canada to also diversify its market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">Earlier this week, Champagne told reporters it was \u201csad&#8230; that our largest trading partner turned its back on Canada, which has led to us having to reassess how we\u2019re going to build the economy of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The finance minister said Saturday that Canada\u2019s mineral deposits were \u201cfront and centre\u201d in the discussions he had in Denmark. Critical minerals are \u201cessential for the economy of the 21st century,\u201d he said, ranging from the aerospace sector to the auto and defence industries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He also pointed to liquefied natural gas and nuclear technology as other potential Canadian exports that could boost European energy security. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe have everything around the table to make us more resilient,\u201d Champagne said. \u201cCanada can be that supplier of choice for our European colleagues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">In an interview with The Canadian Press earlier this week, Champagne said rising NATO commitments and shifting geopolitical forces have European nations planning to spend more on defence, creating a market opportunity he wants Canadian firms to fill.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">He compared it to the role played by Canadian industry in supplying munitions and other military equipment to Allied forces during the Second World War. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">\u201cWe were able, back then, to shift the Canadian economy for success for 50, 80 years. For me, this is the same calling we have today,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-article-body__text text-pr-5\">The meeting in Denmark was attended by finance officials from the United Kingdom, Norway, Ukraine and EU member states.
