The cost to repair Police \u00adScotland\u2019s crumbling estate stands at almost \u00a3232 million, new figures show.<\/p>\n

A Scottish Conservatives<\/a> \u00adinvestigation has laid bare the enormous bill to fix maintenance issues across police buildings and stations.<\/p>\n

The worst repair backlog is in the Greater Glasgow<\/a> division, where a list of upgrades will cost \u00a346.5 million. The bill to fix all outstanding issues across Scotland now stands at \u00a3231.6million.<\/p>\n

A report presented to the \u00adScottish Police Authority last year described the force estate as \u2018unsustainable\u2019 and not fit for modern policing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Scottish Tory community safety spokeswoman Sharon Dowey said: \u2018The\u00a0SNP<\/a>\u2019s sustained neglect has resulted in this truly staggering backlog.<\/p>\n

\u2018It\u2019s appalling that already \u00adoverwhelmed Police Scotland officers are being forced to work in crumbling conditions. This is unsafe and can\u2019t \u00adcontinue.<\/p>\n

\u2018This is not just affecting staff morale \u2013 it can have an impact on the ability of officers to safely police their community.\u2019<\/p>\n

She added: \u2018These conditions are unsustainable, unfair and, coupled with dangerously low officer \u00adnumbers, highlight SNP ministers\u2019 contempt for our police force.\u2019<\/p>\n

The Scottish Police Federation – which represents rank-and-file officers – said Greenock police station requires significant investment to bring it up to scratch<\/p>\n

As of mid-July, 183 Scottish police stations were identified as in need of repairs, with asbestos found in 177 of them.<\/p>\n

In 2023 it emerged that \u00adseveral police buildings had been built with collapse-prone RAAC \u00adconcrete. The cost of removing it from Police Scotland\u2019s former Fettes HQ in Edinburgh was put at around \u00a34 million.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, 140 police stations and almost 100 police counters have closed between 2013 and 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Earlier this year, the Scottish Police Federation – which represents rank-and-file officers – said Greenock police station required hundreds of thousands of pounds for repairs in the last seven years but needs yet more investment to bring it up to scratch.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In March, David Threadgold, \u00adchairman of the Scottish Police \u00adFederation, which \u00adrepresents rank and file officers, warned Scottish Government \u00administers of \u2018policing deserts\u2019 in some areas.<\/p>\n

Mr Threadgold said that station \u00adclosures and stresses imposed on serving Police Scotland officers had created \u2018an almost invisible policing presence, providing an utterly \u00adreactive service\u2019.<\/p>\n

A Scottish Government spokesman said: \u2018We support Police Scotland\u2019s commitment to providing a safe environment for officers, staff and the public.\u2019<\/p>\n

Police Scotland said a \u2018significant number of buildings\u2019 will have been upgraded by the end of the financial year.<\/p>\n
