Further disruption has been announced at Moorfields train station<\/a> as Merseyrail has warned customers of an upcoming closure this weekend into next week. The main entrance of<\/a> the station will be closed on Sunday evening (September 21) due to “essential escalator upgrades.”<\/p>\n The main entrance will be closed from 9pm on Sunday<\/a> and will remain closed on Monday. Merseyrail has advised customers to use the Old Hall Street entrance, which is usually only open from 5.30am to 7pm on weekdays, during this time.<\/p>\n The temporary closure comes just a few months after the escalators were reopened following a lengthy wait. Anti-social behaviour and misuse led to the escalators outside Moorfields being out of action for almost two years.<\/a><\/p>\n What was initially supposed to be a month\u2019s work to repair faulty parts at the Merseyrail<\/a> station dragged on after being beset by delays.<\/p>\n Warning of the further closures on X, formerly Twitter<\/a>, a Merseyrail<\/a> spokesman said: “The main entrance will be closed from 21:00 on Sun 21 Sept & all day Mon 22 Sept for essential escalator upgrades. Please use the Old Hall Street entrance during this time. Please note: The lift will still be available.”<\/p>\n A major renovation is currently underway at Moorfields station. The Liverpool City Region Combined Authority confirmed in July that it will pump \u00a31m into giving the important commuter station<\/a> a facelift.<\/p>\n This will be the first phase of a wider approach aimed at a transformation of the station. The first phase of work will see a refresh of the station’s appearance and accessibility.<\/p>\n The new works will include new cladding, energy-efficient LED lighting, enhanced signage, a covered staircase, and secure, relocated cycle storage.<\/p>\n Subject to planning and design approvals, construction is expected to begin in October and conclude by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n Transport bosses said the project represents the first phase of a broader vision to modernise Moorfields station<\/a>. Work is already underway to develop ‘a more ambitious, long-term transformation’ that reflects the station\u2019s importance to Liverpool\u2019s commercial heart.<\/p>\n Moorfields is an underground station situated on both the Northern and Wirral<\/a> lines on the Merseyrail<\/a> network. It is the third busiest station on the Merseyrail network and its largest underground station.<\/p>\n The station is accessed from two different entrances, one at Moorfields and the other at the corner of Old Hall Street and Tithebarn Street.<\/p>\n The station was built in the 1970s as a replacement for Liverpool Exchange railway station and officially opened in 1977.<\/p>\n Every morning thousands of commuters pass through Moorfields, making their way into the city’s main business district in and around Old Hall Street for work.
